To keep the 3rd gen or the 4th gen

I have a 2000 runner with 204000 miles. It has a 5 speed with a toytec ultimate lift kit. It. Needs nothing and I love it. I also have a 2006 limited all wheel drive with the 4.7 v8. It has 155000 miles and is totally stock. It is a rocket on wheels. Both runners are up to date with all maintenance.
Which one should I keep? If I kept the 2006 I would lift it.

Answer kinda depends on what you DO with the vehicle, what you expect it to do, what you're willing to compromise on and why you're selling.
 
please provide a bit of background concerning what your goals are, for what the sale should accomplish, and your goals for whichever vehicle you keep. for instance, are you strictly wanting to reduce payments, or...is there an issue with parking, or do you want an all-in-one DD + trail-ready vehicle? given they're both in good shape, they should sell but you would get more for the '06, presumably.
 
you will get more resale for the v8. If you don't need to tow often. Keep the lifted stick shift 3Rd gen 4runner and put a supercharger in it with the money you get from the sale of the 4th gen. It will be a blast driving it daily or offroading.
 
I would use as a daily driver, some light offroading and trips to ski and an occasional trip to mexico to fish. I have 3 suv's and am going to get a truck. The runners are paid off so no payments. I have a Lincoln navigator for family trips but it is way to nice to tow or go to remote parts of mexico without worrying about theft or damage.
I realize the 2006 in worth more but not much more. I would use the proceeds from the sale of the 2000 to lift the 2006. That is if I keep it. Thanks for all the replies.
 
I'd probably keep the 4th gen. Lower miles, newer, v8. If you really love the 3rd gen and the 5 speed, sell the 4th gen and supercharge the 3rd gen.
 
We kept both the 3rd gen and 4th gen for the following:

3rd gen has been trustworthy and reliable and we take this into the woods: if we put a scratch on it (or a dent) it'll be a bummer but I won't lose sleep over it. Also great for parking at the train station so if someone dings it we'll be okay.

4th gen has many less miles and we trust it for towing our Scamp trailer (2k lbs I know the 3rd gen can do it too). We know it'll be reliable in the long run.

We own both of them outright and the only costs on them are maintenance and government fees.
 
Nothing wrong with keeping both. I seem to have quite the fleet. Everyone needs a hobby..:D

How much

Add synthetic oil to 3rd gen engine and replace oil and filter once a year. I do that to my LC and 1990 Hilux. Once you sell a truck that you love and built, man trust me you will regret it. Get state minimum insurance on the 3rd gen and that should be about $200 for an year.

You got a 5 speed and you will never get to drive a real man's truck if you let go of it. I would say you will spend $400 a year if you keep it.

I'd say keep them both too! (I have a 99 & 06)

I have an 06 V8 with long travel and its an absolute blast to drive, I actually hardly drive it since the 3rd gen gets better MPG (I live far from work.....).

With that said , there is something about the 3rd gen you just dont get in the big 4th. Its just more fun to whip around on a daily basis, plus for me it was far better for trail riding as I didn't want to destroy my "nice" vehicle.
 
I'm with the rest of the crew and would keep both if possible, but, if you have to choose between one or the other, I would keep the 3rd Gen. I personally prefer the styling of the 3rd Gen 4Runners, they're rather timeless by design, I like their simplicity, and, of course, they generally last quite a long time.

I know the 4th Gen V8's have an excellent reputation as well, but, there's more electronics on those I would imagine, and personally, I really don't get along well with anything electronic, and, I just don't care for the looks of the 4th Gen trucks as much as I do the 3rd Gen's. But, end of the day, if you can keep both, keep both! :yo:

I agree. Ripping around town in the 3rd gen is a lot more fun then the 4th gen. If it gets scratched or dinged it will suck, but its my polaris rzr with climate control. Probably going to keep both and lift the 4th gen. Long travel sure sounds nice. ADS shocks are made locally and the guys there will help tune any thing I get from them.

The gen 3 drives like a truck and is fun to drive. The gen 4 is a lot more plush and powerful but not as fun. Hell I dont even know what some of the buttons do inside. I bought the 4th gen for the wife a while back. She now drives the Lincoln navigator and I thought I would enjoy the v8.
 
I'm a few days late to the party. I had a friend who had a 4th gen & I like my 3rd gen better. Which one do you like to drive better, work on better?
They don't make 5 speed manuals any more. That would settle it for me....
