To rear bumper or not rear bumper?

Just looking for some opinionated feed back from those who have steel rear bumpers, those who want them and those who have decided not to go with one.

I have an 03 limited, demello front bumper and prinsu rack so storage is ample right now. I recently damaged my rear bumper albeit only slightly and also just always wanted the rear bumper for looks/capability carrying a full size spare, fuel cans etc.

My options are limited cbi off road or 4x4 labs. Leaning heavily towards 4x4 labs based on looks, clearance and overall design features. My biggest issue is the price. Im from canada and looking at probably 3500$ canadian to get the bumper shipped, cleared customs and power coated. Thats a lot of money for a mod even though i spent near that on my front bumper getting it here.

Wandering if anyone has any thoughts about this dilemma. Id love to have a rear tire carrier and the added rear protection/looks. Id also like to have that 3500 to put into other mods or other things.

Wilco Hitch Mount tire carrier has my interests as a more affordable option. At least until my bumper is completely destroyed or I find the space to make my own. Upwards of $2k for a bumper is a bit much for me.

Ive looked at their website a fair bit but i think the prices are ridiculous for what it is. Add another 1000 or so and you get a complete bumper piece. Just seems as if I'm wasting money with a temp fix. Although i do like the option of removing it for daily driving etc.. Hmm.

DIY 4X4Labs bumper would cut the cost down if you could weld/fab yourself, or have some help doing it.

Small world. I was in Edmonton for work mid July and saw your truck driving by the University as I was walking. Immediately saw the SCS wheels and thought I bet he's on the forums. Truck looks great!

Why not get a rear bumper: My options like yours were pretty limited. Shipping to Montreal is outrageous. It also adds more weight and I'd need to upgrade my springs again.

Why get a rear bumper: My biggest reason for wanting to get a rear bumper is a place to keep the spare. I keep mine in the trunk space and it takes up a lot of space. I've built shelves over the spare but I still end up using the rear seats as extra storage for things like my cooler, and plastic storage bin to quickly throw boots and tow strap in.

Also I don't want to have my spare on the roof. I have a hard enough time just getting up in to the trunk, I can't imagine how I would lift it way over my head and into a roof basket, or down off the roof basket. Rear bumper would also keep a hi-lift and gas can off the roof.

I found these guys in Ottawa. They seem to do custom bumpers, I see they've done a 5th gen rear. I bet they can do a 4th gen rear. At least its in CDN $ and no duties and brokerage fees etc... There has got to be a customer bumper shop in Alberta. A few guys in my local Toyota 4x4 club might get some made before the end of the year. I'll keep you in mind for a view of finished product if we ever do.

Save the money. Build something simple if you can weld thats what am doing. Its still not finished. Just taking my time not in a rush to build it. Got the idea of a iser on the 120 forum.

I had mine cut out on a plasma table at work and welded it together in a weekend. The latch and the spindle is welded directly to the rear crossmember. You could easily incorporate a rotopax mount or something similiar. More pics in my build thread with a how-to.

There wasn't anything I liked, so I had one made. It is stronger and lighter than any of the plate versions, just really difficult to build. If you can find a good fabricator in your area he could probably do something like I had done. Or you could call the guy at HMF and see what he will do.

I'm just waiting on that magical day when I get my inevitable rear-end collision, then it's bumper time for me.
