To those with HIDS

So i drove my family to dinner tonight and afterwards we stopped by somewhere and my mom was in the back talking on the phone. The truck auto locked or i did, i dont remember, and when she got out later the alarm went off. It turned off after a while no big deal. When i started the truck later, i noticed one of the headlights weren't on. Drove home and switched bulbs from side to side, concluded the alarm headlight flashing killed the ballast. Any idea of how to disable the headlights flashing with the alarm or just to disable to alarm altogether without disabling the immobilizer or keyless entry?

I have a 97 and it is the corner lights that flash when you hit alarm lock/unlock not the headlights.

Brian I think Blizz is referring to when the alarm is actually triggered.
Thats a scary thought to have expensive HID's ruined by your cars safety device.
Hope a solution is found as I just purchased all the parts to do a retrofit.

i've had my alarm go off several times with my hid headlights and have had no problems with the bulbs or ballasts going out since the day i put them in over 2 years ago. however, i am running a relay wiring kit to the ballasts so they get a strong draw and consistent voltage straight from the battery. not sure if this makes any difference, but might be something to look into if you aren't already running one.

might just be the quality of ballast you have. I got a cheapo HID set of on my last car and I had to replace my fog light ballast after a year.

Do you have a wiring diagram for the system? There has to be a few wires that send the signal to the headlights to flash, seems like it wouldnt be to hard to change what change where those signals are sent.

That is if you are comfortable experimenting with something like that.

You'd have to find a wiring diagram for the alarm brain to find the lead going to the headlights and cut/bypass it.

Stock or aftermarket alarm? Do your headlights flash on lock/unlock?

Yep, i was looking through the RS 3200 PLUS manual last night and the headlights flash for i think all of the actual alarm phases.. not just the panic mode.

I feel this shouldn't really matter, because any kind of quick power and then loss of power over many repeated cycles cant be good for the ballasts :l

These were for my retrofit, so they were the good morimoto 3fives.

Stock limited alarm (rs3200 plus). Headlights ONLY flash on alarm and panic mode. For lock/unlock just the 1 and 2 beeps.

who makes your ballast? (OEM Toyota, DDM, Morimoto)

I don't think an OEM (or other high quality) ballast will go bad like that from turning on/off several times.

It is terrible for ANY HID ballast to be cycled on and off repeatedly. Regardless of how it's wired, it still is not a good thing.

I am still surprised though that they would fail from this happening once though. I bet there's another issue at play. Check all your harness connections and grounds.

edit: yup, double and triple checked my grounds and connections. Even relocated one of them just to the battery terminal instead of the frame. Its definitely the ballast, no other reason for failure.

If you want to take your headlights out of the flashing circuit of the alarm

Find pin 10 of plug shown above, and cut the wire.

If you like to keep lights in the front of the vehicle flashing during "triggering" jump the cut wire over to front bumper lights or turn signals, and they will flash instead.

Enjoy the 55W's

I'd be careful running 55w ballasts. Not going to say it can't be done but it's not just a simple matter of "upgrading the ballasts with guaranteed better output." I think you might find this thread interesting: FX-R with 55w Ballast

^^ I would recommend doing this with HID's. Just make the signals and/or parking lamps blink.

Look on ur fuse box and disconnect the alarm hazzards ur ligjts will not turn on only ur horn will beep

Aww crap it probably will but keep ur fuse in ur glove box if u take it of an wenever u need ur hazzard just pop it back in

Lol. Im going to try to find the alarm connector before disconnecting the hazzard fuse, i dont get how the hazard fuse would stop the headlights from flashing though.

I have 4300k hids in mine and wen the alarm goes of the hids and corner signals flash so do the back i dissxonnected the hazzards and the lights cut of but it was a pain putting them back on and of so i left it on just make sure ur ballase is wired right and try changing ur fuses they migjt b bad that migjt b y ur lights are cutting on becouse if the fuse is blown or corrided like mine were then its getting direct power from the battery caussing it to kill it i hope i was use full lol
