Tom Tom radio quality and controls

I just test drove an UrbanRunner with XReas and the Tom Tom nav.

I don't really need the Tom Tom's nav, but it is kind of cool.

The radio seems a little hard to figure out, and it didn't sound very good to me. I need to check the speaker system it comes with. Maybe I am just spoiled but I drive a Passat with the Monsoon system right now with seems much better....


Anybody have experience with the Tom Tom? Maybe I just need to change some settings, or should I trash my Tom Tom. I think it is useful for big city drivers who want to get traffic info so they can avoid jams, but I live in a city of 150k and we don't have too many problems with this...

There have been many posts on the tom tom nav unit. Some good some bad. Just like everything else out there. I too have this system and love it. But..... I had to go through some hoops to finally get it to function i.e. upgrading the SD card (dealers expense). There is a service bulletin on it, so its covered. Read as many post as you can on this thing. You'll learn alot. People have submitted lots of info to help you.
I have mine set up with:

Moto Q phone- bluetooth links as I start runner. I dont touch anything. When I initially paired, it downloaded my contacts list. Caller is heard out of L side of speakers. Caller can hear you well.

IPOD- Connected to eclipse IPC-107P interface cable that you buy seperately (crutchfield). Connects to back of head unit. Ipod is then controlled by touch Nav panel.

I could go on with the many other things it does.

Do you have the service bulletin number. My dealer is clueless.

I dont know what the service bulletin number was. All I did was take the nav unit in to the dealer and told them it was giving me the big red X on the screen. They were kinda clueless as well. I informed them of the service bulletin on it. After they looked it up on the their computer they said that they would take care of it. They informed me that it would take a week or too. I am assuming they had to get the new SD card from TomTom. Probably some sort of Toyota-TomTom agreement. When It arrived the new card was black and not blue like the one that came with tomtom. The new card is version 4200. The service rep came out to my runner with me and went through the installation directions he had that came with the new card step by step. It was a matter of resetting to factory settings and inserting the new card and another reset. Walla! It has worked perfectly since then. Also I have taken the suggestion from other posters on this site to not connect the nav unit to tomtom home on your pc, as this will corrupt the new card. I figure its working great without using home. Why screw it up.
