The wife, dogs, and I are driving from Orlando to Salem,IN. Anyone have any travel tips? For the areas ill be going through? For the 4R? Looking forward to the trip and seeing what true mpg I get on the highway.

Make sure your tire pressure is good - that will affect your MPG's. Also, the faster you go, the worse your MPG's will be. Try using ethanol-free gas when you fill up if available. Ethanol-free gas stations in the U.S. and Canada
Make sure your spare tire is good and properly inflated and that you fully understand how to remove it, change a tire, and then stow the flat tire. Have a good flashlight with you.
Take a quick check inside, around, and under the vehicle and make sure everything looks good. No loose lugs, make sure fluids ate topped off.
Have your wife carry your spare key in case you lose yours or it's locked in the car.
Map out your route and make sure you share it with family members so someone always knows where you should be and at about what time.
Your out-of-State plates will mark you as a traveler and easy target - keep your situational awareness up at all times and be careful with strangers that try to befriend you.
Keep food snacks and water in the car.
Communication gear including cell phone, ham radio, CB, etc...
Enjoy yourself and have a nice trip.

I hope that you have a good trip. I would bring a tire plug kit and small air compressor. There cheap and don't take up any space. I can't wait to see what you get for gas mileage.
We also will be doing a long road trip in July. My wife has a 2011 Highlander not sure what we are taking. We have not been on any long trips with our Toyota's. I travel 38 miles highway round trip to work and only get 15.5 MPH. She is 10 miles highway round trip and gets 16 MPG.
I can't wait to see what you get.

Keep a good eye on the weather...you'll be getting into TORNADO COUNTRY at one point!!! This has been one helluva season for 'em so far! :wow:

Thanks for the tips everyone. I checked all tires(including spare.) Truck was also in the shop on wednesday so we should be good. Out the door at 5 tomorrow morning. Ill update about the gas mileage. I cant get ethanol free gas here in fl, but I will probably get it further north. Also stopping at Jack Daniels. This is a trip ive always wanted to take.

If possible, the optimal speed for most mpg's is 64.5 mph. Did alot of math, and high speed recording, and that gives you the highest speed for the amount of gas (air and gas mix) you draw in at whatever rpm. We towed a 600 pound trailer, mostly at that speed due to the dumb laws, and I got a calculated 22 average mpg on both fill-ups. This was from florida to the mountains in NC. The even stranger thing, is that both of my cats are confirmed to be shot, which is odd I got so much. 15.8 gallons to 336 miles.

if the speed limits 60 ill run 65, if its 65 i run 70, and 70 i run 75. Thats just how I drive regardless of mpg tracking.

how is it that some people are getting 28 mpg? Theres no way that im getting 8mpg less with the way I was driving. Are these conversion errors? I averaged and had my computer average, and we both came up with 20.3mpg.
I don't think anyone is getting 28MPG. But the 22 MPG it is rated for (or even a little better) should be do-able.
The factors are:
1) How new is your Runner - how many miles on it?
2) What is your tire pressure?
3) Do you have any mods - including tires?
4) What kind of gas are you using?
5) Did you have the windows down?
6) How heavily is your vehicle loaded?
7) What is your driving style?
8) What are the weather conditions - head wind, etc...?
9) How fast are you going?
10) What is the terrain you were driving?
See, there are many factors that contribute to mileage and those are the areas I would be looking at.
