Can anybody here give me a real brief tutorial of what to do and what not to do with the TomTom so that I don't end up with the Red X? I'm actually afraid to use it after reading about all the problems.

And by tutorial, I only mean things like getting the updates from TomTom, their services, the most current maps, etc.

i have never even plugged mine into my computer cause im scurred? i havent done any updates on it, other then a larger SD card so for me..i havent had any issues.
 
From what thetaxguy said...everytime you plug it in...it corrupts a certain file and gives you the X of death. I never plugged mine in....and it still did it after about a week or so. So far..the new card from the dealer has fixed the problem. MY problem is that there isn't much on the dam card! Very few POI, very few street names, etc. We need an update....but I'm not sure when you'll see it. I'm starting to regret the UR buy.....should have gone for the Sport w/navi. But then...thats my opinion.
 
Boosted, you won't regret it. The Urban Runner is great. I mean, I love mine. I like it sooooooooo much more than the 06 Sport I had. The Alcantara seats and the 18" wheels sold me on it. I know you have black, but the exclusive Blizzard Pearl color combined with the other stuff and yeah, I'm in love.

As far as the TomTom, sure, it can't compare to a real Nav system. I don't care. I'm sure tomtom will get their issues fixed and that will be that.
 
I had to chime in. I bought a 2008 urban runner with the tomtom over a month a go

The tomtom is better in almost every way to the regular toyota nav...

I upgraded to a 2GB SD card of a premium brand and then found updates on the web to bring it to version 7 with text-to-speech. Use google to search for the 7.831 update. It took a lot of searching, but I was able to get the kate computer voice with the 7.831 working.

So far I've had no issue with the card being corrupted.

Some features on the tomtom that the regular nav lacks:

1. text to speech, they read the street names
2. Infinite voice options (the regular nave only has 3 languages)
3. Customizable color schemes ... I like the garmin scheme.... high contrast for day use and the arctic is geat for night
4. Mapshare data (map correction from other users)
5. Downloadable POI... I got the bank of america and trader joes ones now their logos show up on the map whenver there is one near by
6. 3d maps, (I couldnt find a way to turn this on in the regular toyota nav)
7. Better plotting and find alternat route and find near destination and fine along route (didn't see any of these features on the regular nav)

The only feature the regular nav wins on is the larger screen size.


Things I dont like about the eclipse stereo are the lousy radio reception and cheap buttons. All the buttons feel like they will fall off...


Anyone who has the regular nav system please correct me if it has any of the features I couldn't find...

TomTom came out with a fix for the constant memory card screw up, I've still got the old one, the one that's prone to mess up. I'm on my 3rd memory card but if it messes up again I'll get the newer fixed one and won't have any more problems!

When the card that came with the car fried......I got a new updated one from the dealer. This car had everything you listed. I have kate as my voice, I can go 3D or 2D, different color schemes, more POI then the first.....but I don't want to plug it in, risking another corrupt file. So you're saying that all you did was you downloaded that file you linked, and updated your aftermarket card no problem?
 
Yeah, I downloaded all the version 7 stuff. I would have preferred to get it from the dealer. I spend way to long searching for the new version.

I suggest everyone get version 7 from the dealer (easier then googling for hours).

Also make sure to update your PC/MAC program to the latest version TomTom@home 2.4 is the latest...

Plus, you should backup your card. It only takes about 20-minutes.
