TONG-TUNK noise?

I'm stumped and I'm at my wit's end... I'd really appreciate any answers that would point me in the right direction. I have this knocking sound coming from the rear-right side of my otherwise trusty '05 Sport Edition.

When I go over speed bumps, but more so coming to a stop and right at the "pendulum point" when the truck rocks forth, there is a TONG-TUNK sound coming from the back rear wheel well, right side.

I've spent hours and hours trying to figure this out since I bought it used a year ago.

-yes it has x-reas
-no the rear-right shock shows no signs of leaking
-no it is not the spare tire, I've securely tightened it
-no it is not the exhaust hitting something under the truck

It annoys the crap outta me more and more, I'd really appreciate your help fellas, thanks!

I'm sure you've already checked, but is there anything moving around in the storage compartment back there?
 
This is pretty hard to diagnose without hearing it.
Some known issues are:
1. The rear seat rattle - check to see the latch fits properly around the striker - it should be centered.

2. Exhaust shield. The aluminum shield can come loose and rest on top of the muffler, creating a similar sound you described.

3. Drive line clunk - ensure all zerk fittings on the drive shaft and U-joints are lubed with grease. This may be the cause because you mentioned that it happens when stopping.

4. Occaisonally owners report rear suspension noises - check upper and lower links, as well as the track bar and stabilizer bar - check all mounting points for wear or corrosion.

No there's nothing moving around in the storage compartment, nor is it the car lift kit bumping into the compartment or anything like that. Believe me! I've checked.

Drive line clunk? Zerk fittings? Interesting, I've never thought of that, nor has my mechanic nor the Toyota mechanic. Thanks Rook I'll check it out

I took my 4Runner to the dealer for my last oil change and asked them to lube the zerk fittings for my driveline and I still have the driveline clunk.

I would still give it a try and see if that helps your issue.
 
Where the rear driveshaft enters rear transmission is out of grease? That what people are telling me for my same problem. I tried to get under there to loosen the 4 bolts, but ended up breaking my ear and the socket instead of breaking the bolts loose. Waiting for it to be on a lift to try some T9 and heat application
 
Yep, Driveline clunk. Give the drive shaft about 10 zerks.
I had same problem with my '08, and never had problem again.
 
Are the roofrack locking thumbnuts tight? I have resnugged my running board bolts 2x and was amazed how loose they get.
 
If you hear it after you've come to a complete stop(often when its a hard stop) and when you release the brakes and start to go forward, than its the driveshaft clunk. There is a huge thread here(http://www.toyota-4runner.org/probl...06-tsb-page-18-aka-driveshaft-thump-bump.html) that explains what is wrong and how to fix it.

Pretty much you just get under there with a grease gun and lube the heck out of the grease "nipple" that is to the rear of the u-joint located on the front of the rear drive shaft. While you're down there go ahead and lube all 6 locations. I know I probably confused you but the link I attached will explain it all with tons of pictures.
 
Finally fixed the mysterious clunk

FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT!!!

It was the brake calipers!

went to the dealership, and now, after 3 frustrating visits and $700, the problem has been fixed (Whew!! I was really going insane from this CLUNK noise). IT WAS THE BRAKE CALIPERS. And no, it wasn't just 1 brake, it was 3! (replaced both front brake pad springs, and replaced the right-rear caliper and slide pins as it was completely seized!) So it's safe to assume that the brake calipers were defective, at least for the '05 model 4Runners.
The 1st time I went in, the Service Rep. misdiagnosed it, he cut me off in the middle of my explanation and told me he knew exactly what the problem was... he said the 4Runners & Lexus GX470's have an infamous clunk noise coming from the driveshaft whenever the truck comes to a stop, so I paid about $250 for the labour cost of taking apart the driveshaft and re-greasing the slip differential. But of course that wasn't the problem, so when I drove off the lot the noise was still there so they apologized and put the $250 towards the cost of my next appointment, which was when we discovered the problem.
In any case, it's over, I'm relieved, I feel like a huge burden has been lifted off my shoulders and my truck is whisper quiet!
