Too loose or too tight

I took the spare tire off today and noticed there were some wear marks on the sidewall of the tire. Am I winching up the wheel too tight up against the underside or is it too loose and vibration caused the wear

I'm sorry, the title of your thread threw me off, I was expecting something totally different buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut

I noticed the sidewall on my spare tire was compromised as well from being hoisted too tightly when I removed it for the first time last month. I have plans to relocate the spare this summer to eliminate this from happening which will also make it more accessible in case of emergency.

Mission accomplished. Yes, I plan to put mine in the rear cargo area. I just haven't figured out the orientation I am want to install it yet...

A lot of people don't like this idea because it takes up "valuable" interior space.

The marks on the upper side of the spare, caused by lifting it into place under the rear, are normal. I remove my spare every year when rotating tires, and have found that these marks clear up in a few days. I have over 50k on my oem Bridgestone HT's, and have not had one problem caused by these marks. If you don't lift the spare securely into place, it will move around, cause noise, and possibly loosen in lift mechanism. I, IMHO, wouldn't worry about them.
