Too many miles to mod?

Hey guys, my 2003 4Runner is sitting at 192K miles. Shes maintained regularly and I have owned her since around the 80k mile mark so I know her history for the most part. She has been nothing but good to me (back and forth from college, now work, endless trips, etc.)

Shes a sport edition so I am really considering lifting her but before I do I'm just wondering if it makes since with as many miles as she has. I know Runners can run pretty much forever and I don't plan on selling but what is your guys mileage cut off for mods (if you have one)? Anything to know before moving forward?

Lol... Start the modding with a new engine and tranny?
 
If you plan on keeping the vehicle a while longer then I wouldn't be afraid to mod it to your liking regardless of mileage. Sounds like you take good care of it, so you should be able to get plenty more miles out of it.

I wouldn't spend the money if you were planning to get rid of it anytime soon though, or if the truck has any major issues.

As long as the engine is maintained well then reaching 300k miles or even 400k miles is very doable. I have a little over 230k miles on my 05 runner V6. Running PERFECT. Doesn't burn any oil. Expect to easily reach 300k miles.

As to the OP's question. Mods are a personal choice. If you only planning on keeping the vehicle another year or so..then don't go overboard on the mods.

Back in the 70's I owned a Vega (Yea I know...). I put in a new steel sleeve lined engine...dual carb setup. Tuned exhaust. Front and rear spoiler....New paint job...Then 2 weeks later it was totaled by a drunk city working driving a garbage truck.
 
high mile modding

Do it, I started modding at aroung 90k. I have almost 130k now and the truck runs awesome. The v6 is a good motor and I plan on driving it for a long time. I seriously may give it to my son in 5 years when hes ready to drive(if he proves himself to be a responsible teenager). By then it will be a little more beat by then up but whats cooler the a heavily modded old toyota truck? It would be %100 worth it to put a new motor ar tranny in it if it came to that. I just orderd a demello single hoop bumper, and sliders are next. I see it as since the miles are getting up there im less afraid to use it hard like the awesome rig that it is. When it was new it was a baby hauler now its a whole different vehicle. Just be carefull with the mods because its hard to stop, Im into this little hobby for about $7,000 at this point. There are guys on here who have spent uch more than that easy.
 
I started modding my '06 as soon as I bought it at 109,500 last summer. It has 115,365 now and running better than ever. As stated, just make sure you maintain it, keep it clean (make sure rust is under control) and fix problems as soon as they start. Modding it can also help the truck in some ways. Such as a lift can mean new suspension components (shocks, springs, ball joints, etc.) Good luck!
 
That's the perfect time to mod! As others have said, if it isn't in need of repairs currently, go for it. The fact that you know the history of this vehicle only makes it better. I bought mine with 117K on it and now at 130K I'm going to start the transformation process. I wanted to drive it for a while to make sure there were no problems before investing any money into it.

The legendary reliability of the 4Runner is for real and the V8 is a very stout motor. I did a used oil analysis at my last oil change and there was virtually no trace of metals that could indicate engine wear. I agree if you take care of it, you should easily get you to 300-400K without replacing the motor, or possibly even the transmission.

I bought a Land Cruiser at 172K and started modding like crazy. Sixteen yeras later I still have it, it has 405,000 miles on it now, still rock solid. I just bought a 2006 SR5 V6 4Runner with 177K. It looks and feels like new. My neighbor (who has a Tundra with 300K) said of my "high miles," "So, it's brand new?" I think very little of miles on clean Toyotas. Do what you want, it's not dying any time soon.

Wow, thanks for the feedback guys. I've up'ed my mileage to 225K since posting and just invested some $$$$ in her with new timing belt/water pump, new cats, induction service, air filters and such so keeping her around for a long while. Truck's fantastic, so reliable!

As far as mods go, thinking of doing the Bilstein 5100s w/ FJ springs lift and maybe have some fun with lighting. Nothing too crazy and still very much practical.

I have a 2004 v6 sport with 197k. Last November I did my first big mod and added a Toytec Boss lift. I love it. My only regret is that I did not start any mods until then. I have owned this truck since new. Runs excellent so will be doing more things in the near future which include bigger tires and putting on new wheels from a 2010 5th gen trail. Looking at a CBI hidden front hitch and getting rid of the JBL system. Fun times indeed!

Glad to see you are also modding a high miliage truck too!
