If its a V8 then ask if the timing best was replaced and when other than that it should just be routine maintenance such as oil changes, Spark plugs, trans oil, and diff oil's. Also if a V8 check the exhaust headers for any cracks. Im stating the obvious here but dont forget to take her for a real good spin

You want maintenance records. I bought a used 4r thinking the engines run for ever and found out the hard way. Just got my 2004 back today with a "new" used jdm engine with approx 45k miles. When the mechanic opened up the old motor, you could tell the owner before liked to run the oil almost twice as long as they should of.

$15K for an 05 Limited with that many miles is way over priced. V8 or V6?
A car with that many mile, I'd be looking for the following...
1. Shocks replaced? If not, may be better so you can choose what you want to replace them with.
2. All VIN stickers on the vehicle? If so, then look again there still may be damage.
3. If V8, has timing belt been replaced? I'd imagine it has, but you never know. There should be a sticker by the front of the engine indicating it has
4. If V8, there's more than likely going to be a "ticking" on cold start up as a result of cracked headers. Typically the passenger side.
5. If V6, then there's occasional head gasket issues, but again "occasional"
6. If 4WD, does it engage in 4LO easily? Does is engage in 4WD if V6?
7. There's a known leak with the transfer case actuator. If it's leaking put some anti-leak fluid type stuff in and it will stop leaking. Research this on the forum, it's been covered.
Those are the major issues I've seen on this forum. Probably missed a few.

Asking 15k for an eight year old truck with 122k is tough to swallow for me. If its at a dealer they most likely picked it up for 10-11k on a trade in. If you like it, start with a low ball offer, as I don't see to many people jumping on it. Most banks / credit unions wont offer loans for cars older then seven years old so that helps you when negotiating (less people to make an offer)

on this side of the country, add $5k to that price...
in fact a friend was just checking out an 06, with maybe just a touch less miles, they were asking $21k.
and, thats about the going price, $18-21k
also, OP i believe there is an issue with the front calipers freezing up.

Granted he's asking too much and it's been on clist for a month, but I think region/demand plays a big part in the price.

So, I don't think the price is too bad. As others have said. It's all about the maintenance on a used car. I paid 14.5k for mine with 101k miles. It was a one owner with proof of every single maintenance item done either on time or early through Toyota. 73 year old retired Air Force captain was the PO. So, for out here it was a great bargain.
How many owners on the one you're looking at?
as mrrab said, check all the vin stickers. There are toyota stickers on each body panel, door, tailgate etc. They should all match the VIN. Regardless what carfax says about accidents I'd check them.
Also, make sure 4lo works. I bet out there in NC the 4lo was probably rarely used. If it doesn't get used it seems they have a chance of 'sticking'.
It's interesting about the V8 tick. I know a few folks at work with V8 4Runners and none of us have the tick. I've heard it's related to salt in the winter but I don't know.
Make sure the xreas system (if equipped) isn't leaking. Apparently salt/rust can cause premature wear of that system as well. If it's an original NC car you probably won't have a lot of salt issues, but if they got it at auction it could have come from anywhere.
Put the VIN into Toyota's ownership page and see what comes up.

Gut tells me to pass on that one. Plus, what Limited doesn't have a rear spoiler??? Noticed they posted a "special" price of $13,995. I'd imagine their going to sit on that vehicle for some time given the prior damage. IMO, it's $12,750 - $13,500 car.

Just bought my '05 Limited v8 4x4 for $14.4k here in NJ with 76k miles. It was a 1 owner that I was able to check the history on.

Lets assume it's in perfect condition and perfectly maintained and worth 15k.
Without service records I would knock 3k off of the price and offer 12K. Now you have an extra 3k laying around for whenever stuff starts to break down.
