Too much Bass?

Total newb here to the Forum and a first time Toyota 4runner owner with a simple question.

The OEM CD player in my 08 seems to be way overdriven on the bass end. I have to turn the bass setting to -4 and trebble to +4 just so I can hear more than just bass. However, this setting totally messes up the midrange.

Is the OEM stereo in the 4runners normally "bass driven".

I suppose if I listened to nothing by HipHop it would be OK,, but I dont and so it is anoying.

Hmm, it shouldnt be that bad. It may be that you have the auto adjust (can't think of what is called) setting set to high. I've noticed the bass increase substancially to accomodate the road noise. You can turn it off by pressing the tune button a few times where you adjust your sound settings. It has a low, med, high, but i just keep mine off. See if that helps.

ASL- thats what its called. Adjustable sound level or somthing.

The base stereo plain sucks. I lived with it for a month or so before replacing it.

Do yourself a favor and do what I recently did. Buy a T1808 or T1809 Scion radio on eBay for anywhere from $50 - $200. Install it in your 4runner (pretty easy). Sell the POS original radio on eBay for upwards of $50. You'll be very happy. BTW, the best part is you can control your iPod with the Scion radio and still have a CD. Best easy upgrade ever. Huge improvement in sound quality.

4R stereo sucks

I hate the 10 speaker system in the 4R. There are so many better options at their disposal and they still choose to use this setup even in the new tundras. It is probably a contract thing, but sheesh who is the contract administrator for that one. My Altima (2003) stock stereo is solid. It sounds great and doesnt sound so segmented as my 4R does. In fact the only way to get any juice out of my 4R system is to connect my ipod (via tape adapter) and use my ipod as somewhat of an amp.....super weird and shitty.

That scion deck swap has been around awhile. I think that needs to be the next upgrade. One question.....are you still able to keep the sterring wheel controls with the scion deck?

To answer both of your questions, the Scion is plug and play and it does maintain the steering wheel controls. Fits perfectly too. You will lose operation of the little aux. jack in the center console unless you do some pretty fancy mods, but instead you buy a $70 cable from eBay which connects to a jack on the back of the Scion head unit. This cable then runs to your iPod inside your glove compartment. iPod is then controlled by the head unit.

Well just won a couple of ebay items,, a SCION T1808 and the Ipod cable, total cost $149 shipped.

looking forward to installing it next week when it arrives. Hopefully it's not a major effort to pull and replace the stock unit. I'll post some pics when its in.

The JBL with nav in my 2005 is a bit basey. The JBL with nav in my dad's 2006 sounds much crisper so go figure. Also, they both have the same audio settings. Good luck with the Scion HU.
