Did the engine ever lock up when it was gulping agua?
Did you get all of the water out of the intake and cylinders? Filter housing, lines, manifold.
Gulping water is not always a tragedy for an engine. My first T4R was an '86 4 banger w EFI. I took it for a lake swim, fell into a hole and gulped agua big time. Complete lock up!
I removed the breather to find water all the way up to the butterfly. The engine was plenty warm from 4-wheelin', so after about 20 minutes I gave it a try. It turned over then locked up again. Keep in mind that during this time we're sitting in water with the driver's side tires completely submerged.
A number of tries later, the ignition kept it running. It idled rough, but it limped out of the lake bed. I parked with the passenger side elevated to try and drain water out of the cabin, while at the same time letting it idle. The heat of the engine boiling the water in the cylinder heads is my theory of how I got it started.
The idle smoothed out, and eventually I couldn't tell that it had ever happened. I did change the oil, universal and transmission fluids though.
Moral is, keep trying while it's hot. Cold could take longer.
