Tool Needed

Anyone want to lend me their "specialty" tool made for tightening that crank bolt. I don't have the resources to make one and do not want to buy something else that I might have to.

I've looked and looked for creative ways to tighten it, no way other then to make a tool or buy a chain wrench...

Any new ideas or a lenderer would be great.

My local autozone rents tools for free. they "sell" you it then once you bring it back they refund 100%. I used an O2 sensor socket for a 98 civic because I didn't have one of a big enough wrench. They were very nice to me about it too. Maybe they have what you're looking for.

Yes I called up advanced to see if they could let me rent one from them and they did not have any. I will try auto zone to see if they have them.

I made mine in about twenty minutes. It would take more effort to ship it. If you want to make two trips to NJ you can borrow it.

Put two drill bits in pulley holes. Place 2x4 on bits and bang with hammer to leave marks. Holes should be on diagonal with plenty of wood PAST the holes or the wood will split. Avoid knots. Drill 3/8" holes at marks. Center your 19mm socket between holes and draw a circle around it. Use slightly larger hole saw on circle. Put 3/8" inch bolts in holes. Tighten nuts. You're done!! No ruler, no measuring, no plans!!

Wow.. GENIOUS! Never even crossed my mind to just use a wooden 2x4. Didn't think that would hold all the torquing. But will give it a shot. Really appreciate it The Durk!

Just be sure to make the holes on the diagonal as I did--NOT on the centerline--and leave wood on the far side of the bolts--at least 8", I'd say. I left more to stay away from the knots in my 2x, but don't leave any less. There is plenty of room below the crank end, so don't skimp.

The long holder lets you set up with a cheater on your breaker bar and you can push on one and pull on the other, effectively doubling the torque applied to the crank bolt with a moment-arm of maybe four feet on both. Buttah.....

I would get a short piece of chain and bolt it to the harmonic balancer bolt hole (8mm x 1.25), then bolt the chain end to the power steering bracket.

Make sure there is no slack.

Tighten the HB bolt and the chain will keep the balancer from turning.
