I am doing an engine swap for my 1997 4runner I bought. I am taking the blown HG engine out, and running into a few problems. The main one is the dust plate bolts are hard to get to and pita to remove. My quetions are, dfo I really need to remove that plate as it is attached to the tranny and not the engine. If so, then what tools do I need to remove them. The ones on the driver side are the really tough ones to get to and try to remove. Other question I have is, do all the wire connectors on the tranny need to be disconnected? From what I can see they do, but trying to do just what I need to get this engine swap done. Thanks for any advice and pointers.

The dust plate needs to come off to get to the bolts that hold the flywheel and torque converter together. The torque converter won't sneak pass the dust cover if you try to pull the engine with out seperating. I've never taken a dust cover off of an auto trans model but the manual trans only has 4 12mm bolts holding it on IIRC.

Mine are 12mm and harder then hell to get to. Thanks for the FYI, though, now need to figure out how to get the 2 on drivers side off.

Yeah you're right, 12mm.
Wait till you get to the torque converter to flywheel bolts :hiding: you won't be happy about them at all!
I have to take those off also, to get engine off?:crybaby:

Yup, you'll need to spin the engine by hand to get the bolts into that little window the dust cover provides.
