My cv boots have been torn for a while, is it safe to drive it in 2 wheel drive?
The 4runner is a 91 sr5 4x4 with 360k

Unless you've got manual hubs, your CVs are spinning whether or not you're in 4wd. If there's no noise and no vibrations coming from the front end, I'd say you're probably safe to drive it if you had to. Like, say, to the mechanic to get your CV joints replaced.
If they've been torn for a while, though, I wouldn't trust it at all on the freeway. Google "what happens when a CV joint fails".

It will start making that clicking sound while making turns,right? Can I safely drive it until it makes the clicking sound? How do I know when it's getting really bad and dangerous?

I'm not a mechanic, so maybe somebody will come by and give you a more definitive answer, but I would say no. If the boots have been torn for any amount of time, then you're guaranteed to have contamination in the joint. If that thing fails at any sort of speed, you're likely to get a loose CV shaft spinning around your undercarriage like a wrecking ball, and that's gonna hurt.
CV's are not that expensive, why not just replace them and avoid all the guesswork?

your fine to drive it, but i would just get a new one to throw in there. they are fairly cheap and take about an hour to replace depending on if youve done it or not... i wouldnt take it on a cross country trip with it like that.

I use to work for BMW and the X5 was common with front CV boots tearing. You should be fine as long as you: avoid dirt/gravel roads (any debris can cause wear and you might have to replace more than the boot after a while), make sure it doesn't get dry or filled with water.
Never tried it but I'm sure duck tape will hold you over (better than being exposed to the elements). Also, they sell split boots for a quick, easy fix, but they don't last as long as the OEM boot.
