Hi, I have a1996 4 Runner started making a horrendous rattle when shifting in various modes, but not too bad when just driving although I do feel slipping. The mechanic says its the torque converter, fine, does this necessitate a complete rebuild as he states @1500 is it possible there are loose TC bolts that could be tightened what is the dope on huge rattling noises in there. Can the TC be replaced separately? Thanks.

The torque converter can be replaced by itself. It's just an automatic clutch between engine and trans. Basically it's a fluid filled chamber with a fan diving another fan. Maybe around $300 for the converter but will require the engine and trans to b separated. That will not require a rebuild at all.
A loose converter bolt will NOT cause a slip.
Does it slip in reverse too? Does it slip in every gear?
Check fluid level. Low fluid will cause a slip. I'd drop the pan and check for clutch residue build up. It sounds like burnt up clutches to me. That will require a rebuild.
I've rebuilt a few transmissions, pretty hard to troubleshoot w/o driving.

Start by dropping the pan and filter yourself.
Use a spotless pan to collect the fluid and make sure you clean the tranny pan and all around it the day before (pressure washer = good).
You can tell a LOT by looking at the fluid, filter and magnetic pickup as to what the health of your tranny is. You are looking for metal fragments and a more than normal metallic residue in the fluid.
If your TC is factory I strongly doubt it is "loose bolts".
Also, you didn't state your mileage or the history of the truck (babied or beat to hell?).
