Torque Converter?

Alright, newbie here and was looking for an "educated" source to a problem. 2000 4Runner SR-5 V-6/Auto 2wd, 99,300 miles. Definitely transmission or torque converter or both issue. At a stopped position, with foot on break. No strain on drivetrain but when I ease off the brake, without touching the accelerator, feels like the rear rises a little (don't think it does but feels like it) and then there's a thump in the drivetrain like something is engaging? Doesn't do it pointing uphill just on level or pointed down surfaces. Could this be the torque converter engaging/slipping? Any other suggestions?

Check for slack in the U-joints. Got 4X4? Try it in 4whl, this will make use of the front joints as well, so if they're good and you don't get the thump go for the rear joints.

What RPM is it engaging at (flash speed) if you stomp on it from a stop? It's odd for a daily driver converter to go out. Check trans fluid for level, smell, color and grittyness. Maybe a dirty filter too.
