Torque Specs.

I pulled this of the TTORA site. Don't know if its still up there or not.

It has the specs for the 2/3RZ, and the 5VZ. Make sure you read it right!!

I know these are for a Tacoma, but the majority Of them will apply to our 4Runners, with the exception of the leaf spring and u-bolts.

If there's something you want to correct, PM me and I'll be sure to add it/change it as necessary.

Torque specifications

Engine:

Throttle body mounting nuts/studs: 13 ft-lbs

Spark plug: 14 ft-lbs (2RZ/3RZ), 13 ft-lbs (5VZ)

Oil drain plug: 27 ft-lbs

Engine mount to frame: 28 ft-lbs

Engine mount to block: 38 ft-lbs (2RZ/3RZ), 32 ft-lbs (5VZ)

Head bolts: 29 ft-lbs + additional 90° + another 90° <follow pattern> (2RZ/3RZ)

Head bolts: 25 ft-lbs + additional 90° + another 90° <follow pattern>, recessed 13 ft-lbs (5VZ)

Main bearing caps: 29 ft-lbs + additional 90°(2RZ/3RZ), 45 ft-lbs + additional 90° (5VZ)

Exhaust manifold: 36 ft-lbs (2RZ/3RZ), 30 ft-lbs (5VZ)

Intake manifold: 22 ft-lbs (2RZ/3RZ), 13 ft-lbs (5VZ)

Air Intake Chamber: 15 ft-lbs (2RZ/3RZ), 13 ft-lbs (5VZ)

Crankshaft pulley bolt: 193 ft-lbs (2RZ/3RZ), 217 ft-lbs (5VZ)

Oil pan bolts: 9 ft-lbs

Rear main oil seal: 9.7 ft-lbs

Rear end plate: 14 ft-lbs

Starter mounting bolts: 29 ft-lbs

Pressure plate to flywheel: 14 ft-lbs

Flywheel to crankshaft bolts: 65 ft-lbs (2RZ), 19 ft-lbs + additional 90° (3RZ), 63 ft-lbs (5VZ) ~USE LOCTITE~

Flexplate to crankshaft bolts: 54 ft-lbs (2RZ/3RZ), 61 ft-lbs (5VZ)


Drivetrain:

Lug nuts: 83 ft-lbs

Transmission bellhousing to engine: 53 ft-lbs

Starter mounting bolts: 29 ft-lbs

Transmission crossmember to frame: 48 ft-lbs

Transmission mount to crossmember: 14 ft-lbs

Transmission mount to transmission housing: 48 ft-lbs

Transmission housing to transfer adapter: 27 ft-lbs

Transmission housing to transfer case: 17 ft-lbs

Shift lever retainer: 29 ft-lbs (2RZ/3RZ), 13 ft-lbs (5VZ)

FRONT:

Brake caliper mounting bolts: 90 ft-lbs

Brake caliper banjo bolt: 22 ft-lbs

Steering knuckle to lower ball joint: 59 ft-lbs ~USE LOCTITE~

Outer tie-rod to lower ball joint: 67 ft-lbs

Lower control arm to frame (alignment cams): 96 ft-lbs

Lower control arm to shock absorber: 101 ft-lbs (may vary with aftermarket equip)

Lower control arm to swaybar end link: 51 ft-lbs

Lower ball joint to lower control arm: 112 ft-lbs

Upper ball joint to upper control arm: 80 ft-lbs

REAR:

Backing plate to axle housing: 50 ft-lbs

Shock absorber to axle: 53 ft-lbs

Shackle bolts (both): 67 ft-lbs (may vary with aftermarket equip)

STEERING:

Steering wheel set nut: 26 ft-lbs

Outer tie-rod to lower ball joint: 67 ft-lbs

Tie-rod end lock nut: 41 ft-lbs

Steering rack mounting clamp: 123 ft-lbs

Steering rack vertical center mounting bolt: 123 ft-lbs

Miscellaneous:

Seat mounting bolts to body: 27 ft-lbs

Seat belt: 30 ft-lbs (all mounting points)

Body mounting bolts: 48 ft-lbs

Conversion Factors:

1 ft-lb = 12 in-lb = 1.35582 Nm

what about the cam gear bolts and the water pump bolts? need to know these to replace cam seals and water pump.

What are the torque specs for the 6 bolts that attach the flex plate to the torque converter on the 1997 Toyota 4runner 5VZ-FE engine?

I am having one heck of a time finding it. :(
 
what about the cam gear bolts and the water pump bolts? need to know these to replace cam seals and water pump.

On my 97 4Runner / 2.7 L 3RZ-FE I4 the water pump has two bolt sizes.

I read that the bolts with the 10mm head are supposed to be torqued to 5.75 Ft-Lbs or 69 In-Lbs. I torqued them to 10 Ft-Lbs. The two bolts with the 12mm head are supposed to be torqued to 20 Ft-Lbs.

I also read that the Camshaft Timing Belt Sprocket Bolt is torqued to 40 Ft-Lbs.
 
Gen3 Rear Trailing Arms / Control Arms Torque Specs?

Can anyone share the torque specs for the Rear Trailing Arms / Upper Control Arms and Track Bar?

I apologize if this is old news, but cannot locate this/these torque specs.

I see plenty of posts about leaf springs and mounts, but not the trailing arms.

Any assistance is appreciated.

Which torque specs is right?

I just did my rear struts today and torqued them to spec(47). I have the FSM to reference and will post a pic of where it says 47 foot pounds. I did a quick search and am finding a lot of people claiming the torque spec is like 72 foot pounds for the same lower bolt on the rear suspension. My FSM is for 1997 4runner. Maybe the newer 3rd gen FSM changed the torque spec? If someone could shine some light on this that would be great, don't mean to threadjack but do think it is relevant. That's almost 30 ft pounds difference! Any help would be great , thanks!
 
steering rack torque

The steering rack torque appears to have changed on the horizontal bolt & nut. The old 1996 Tacoma/4Runner FSM calls out 141 ft/lbs and the newer 2002 4Runner FSM calls out 96 ft/lbs. Big O Tires also has 96 ft/lbs on their source. I spoke with a guy at Toyota and he came up with 151 ft/lbs. (I think he's looking at the wrong FSM). Anyway either one is quite a difference. Maybe it causes premature wear on the heavy rubber bushing at 141 ft/lbs so they changed it to 96 ft/lbs. ?? Here's what was posted for steering rack torque on this initial post: (maybe someone can confirm the revision?)

p.s. Don't be fooled by steering rack or driver's side outer tie rod wiggle/play that you can't seem to get rid of. Especially if you're at or near 200K miles, and maybe even 100K. (I had a spare rack with 100K, same issue). The rack housing has another needle bearing deep down in the steering stem that apparently wears out. It's not just the rack guide and spring issue or mount bushings in my experience, or it might be getting damaged hammering off tie rod ends. Use a puller. And I don't know if the needle bearing can be serviced. I bought a new Toyota rack and I'm done. Enough wasted time and effort. My '99 4Runner has 230K miles.

This is one of those crazy Toyota idiosyncratic things, why not make it 123 ft-lbs across the board?

141 to 96 is a pretty big difference.
 
5vzfe Water pump stud bolt torque spec

Hey Doc do you have the torque requirements for part #90116-08270? These are the three stud bolts that the water pump slides onto and then the thermostat housing is fastened with three nuts. I think all the nuts call for 14ft lbs but have been unable to find the stud bolt torque spec. Thank you
