Tough decision to make.

So my current situation I am commuting to work via bicycle. I blew the head gasket on the 4 runner. I am trying to figure if it is financially worth it for me to fix the motor and keep driving or if I should just sell it at a reduced price and let someone else fix it. As for mods.
88 4runner 22re 5spd
All Pro 5 inch lift front and rear.
Disk breaks all around cross drilled.
Disk trans ebrake
4.88 gears
Locker in the rear
2 extra 4.88 gears one inside of a complete extra 85 rear axle.
extra transfer case
Extra driveshaft
New header and complete exhaust
cross over steering
Fresh A/C (reason I blew head gasket)
35" BFG Muds about 40% tread left Full size spare
Possible extrea set of 35" BFG AT's 95% tread mounted on wheels.
Rock sliders and rear bumper swings out with tire and jack mount.
Rebuilt rear driveshaft all new yokes and cv joint.
Dual batteries.

I figure it is going to cost me almost 1700 just to rebuild and install the motor

So would I be outlandish asking 3700 as it is and sending everything with it?
Or should I keep it and get working on the motor.

OF course the new vehicle option will be a toyota.

Are you sure about the 1700 tag? It seems a lil high. A head gasket is not 'rebuilding the engine'. and whoever told you you had to 'reinstall' the engine may have been looking to make a profit.

I'm not an expert, but i"ve had a couple 22's apart, and they're not all that difficult. (they are more difficult than a 4af, tho'!)

I don't know where you could get 3700 for one, but if you're 'in the mood' to sell, do it. Personnally, I'm here because Toyota stopped building the fancy trucks I like with the fiberglass shells about twenty years ago.

My biggest issue is that I don't like to do things half A**ed. There is water through most of the engine block. I just don't want to go through the motions again by only replacing the head gasket. The motor has approximately 135K on itandI already did the T-chain, water pump thermostat clutch rar main front main oil pump etc about 3 years ago on this engine. Used motors will cost me more then just rebuilding mine.

To rebuild it I am looking at $950.00 and that comes with a one year unlimited milage waranty. I found a place to do it for $1500.00 and they offer a 3 year unlimited milage warranty. The only thing that gets reused are the head and the long block. All internals get replaced from top to bottom and I have the option of having it bored 30, 40 or 60 over.I already purchased a used lower intake plenum since mine has a bolt snapped off in it for the heater core return line. I also planned on getting a V6 radiator to help with cooling So thats where I came up with my financial estimate. This is with me pulling the engine myself.

I have found a place to install it for me for about 500 bucks.

Overall in the last 3 months I have put almost 1000 into it fixing things and I am just wondering what next if I do rebuild the engine. I don't play in the water or mud down here I did that once and well what do you think resulted in the 1000 in maintainace.

Well having said that, I see your point. You're a good one to consider all those things since you have to take the Tchain off to remove the head.

With 135k, you can either look to do it, and keep it for another 10 years-or you can skip the work, and sell it to someone looking for a deal.

Personally, I'd take option 1, and keep going down the road. How's your undercarriage? Can you be looking at any suspension/bodywork after the drivetrain is done? If the truck is in otherwise good shape, I'd get my engine back and keep on truckin'.

Just got back from droping it off at the repair shop. With the kind of rain we are having I just can't do the work without shelter. So I should hear from them as to when the motor is pulled go pick it up and drop it off at the machine shop and then send it back once its rebuilt. Granted its going to be a week and a half process sucks but I have to do it.

I had to do a full rebuild on my old '86 when I had it, took three weeks, and I had no other car... But it was well worth it.

Just make sure to have the head bolts re-torqued after 500-1000 miles. They told me to, and I never did, and I've kicked myself from the day the head gasket went the second time.
