tough transfer shifter

i've got a problem with the transfer case shifter on my '87. it almost takes getting in the back seat and pushing on the shifter with one foot to go back to 2wd. that may be a little harsh of a description but still not far from the truth. anyone had any trouble with a shifter that just does not want to shift back to 2wd without a lot of muscle. and when it actually shifts, it kind of violently "clunks" into 2wd.
this is my first post. i like the website and love my 87 4runner.

at a stop. i didnt mention that it has manual locking hubs (i think it came originally with automatic hubs?). a mechanic next to my shop suggested torque windup or a the shift linkage (seems like an obvious starting point anyway). i have been advised to try shifting while rolling. if nobody else replies with the same problem, i'll starting tracking it down mechanically. just wondered if it may be a common thing.

Binding up is a possibilty, try backing up a few feet before shifting.

Try unlocking the hubs first and see if that makes a difference.
