Tow Ratings Standardization

Automotive manufacturers agreed in 2008 to standardize tow ratings as specified in the SAE's Surface Vehicle Recommended Practice J2807 to take effect by 2013. An article dated December 21, 2009 Tow Ratings Finally Pass the Sniff Test - The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) - Automobile Magazine in Automobilemag.com gives a good overview of the new standards. Prior to this, manufacturers pretty much advertised whatever tow ratings they wanted, and there was no "apples to apples" comparison between brands or models.

The reason I am posting this information now, is that beginning with the 2010 models, Toyota is using the new SAE tow ratings standards which includes the 2010 5th Gen 4Runner. If you are trying to compare tow ratings between Toyota and other manufacturers, you will have to do the research yourself to see whether the other companies are using the SAE standards or their own numbers since they have until 2013 to comply.

Although the new standards will give a more realistic tow rating and allow this "apples to apples" comparison, it does not speak to the durability and longevity of chassis/power trains/etc. However, for Toyota customers you should understand that Toyota builds in a performance buffer or margin. For example, if Toyota is claiming a 5,000 lbs tow rating, the vehicle is actually engineered and designed for a higher number (5,500 - 6,000 lbs. or whatever---a number for legal reasons Toyota may not want us to know). The vehicle is designed for this higher tow rating, and engineered so that it will tow "X" number of days per year, "X" number of miles per year and perform and last through the warranty period of the vehicle. Then the lawyers figure out the statistical probability of performance and failure for the warrantied life of the vehicle to come up with the final tow rating. So for Toyota it's a two step process were they now meet the SAE standards, but also make sure that the advertised tow rating is well within what the maximum capability of the vehicles actually is. Note: Do not exceed the recommended tow rating of your vehicle, and make sure you are towing smartly and safely, taking all variables into account when you tow. This should just give you some peace of mind that your Toyota was designed for both capability and longevity.

Very interesting.

A few things come to mind: 1) Minumum braking standards is cool. I'd love to know what the manufacturers did before this. I'm sure the legal department had a lot of say. They may have been even more conservative than these numbers. 2) I love the 100F Arizona test. I think more than one vehicle will need a lower rating. 3) I like the clarification of vehicle weight. The "Tow Vehicle Trailering Weight (TVTW)" is a great concept. 4) I have to wonder if the new Dodge 1500 applied this standard when it came out. It has a really low tow rating compared to others for no reason IMHO.

Interesting info. I think this is going to make a lot of vehicles rethink their tow ratings. I wonder if any manufacturers will go back and re-evaluate any of their existing models and numbers. I was especially interested in the section on braking performance. I noted the following:

"The parking brake must be capable of holding the rig on 12-percent up and down grades."

Given the amount of discussion about the limitations on the present parking brake system on the 4gen with its small internal drum brake system, I wonder how much that will impact its tow ratings alone.
 
:nicethread: I can't believe how many consumer product specs have no testing standards. I was happy when consumer electronics started following CEA-2006 and I hope other vehicle manufacturers will pick up these towing standards sooner.
 
Hopefully it'll help them, unlike when they accepted SAE J1349 for engine power ratings.

I have to wonder what the tow rating for the 5th Gen 4Runner will be even if Toyota makes the V8 and 4WD available in the future.
Will it be 7K lbs or only 5K lbs? If the V8 can only tow 5K lbs using the Towing Standards, then it starts to make sense why Toyota may be reluctant to offer the V8 & 4WD.
 
does anyone have the GCWR for 2009 or earlier V8 4runner?

I am trying to look at it for the fun of it and compare. I am looking for the GCWR which is not posted at toyota or edmunds and would be the combined max total weight of the vehicle plus whatever is being towed.

This is often where people fail and they tow within the limit (barely) and then pile 3 people in the car and a bunch of stuff and now they are way over on the GCWR or even the GVWR of the vehicle itself.

Well if 12,000lbs is the GCWR and you tow 7,000 lbs that is the max with a V8 on a 4Runner then you add the curbweight of 4530 you have a combined weight of 11530. Better not add any people

Actually the numbers tells me that the 4Runner is pretty well balanced based on previous years ratings (will check the GCWR when I get home for the 2010 limited).

My armada basically maxes out at the GVWR before I max out on the towing limit. That is a problem so I have to hand it to Toyota and the 4Runner (the Sequia has the same issues as the Armada)

The '09 GX 470 and '10 GX 460 have the same tow rating of 6500lbs.

It would be reasonable to assume a 4.6 in a 5th gen 4R would get the same tow rating as a 4th gen 4R with a 4.7
