Tow strap/Recovery strap??

Rookie here…..Whats the difference between a tow strap and a recovery strap?

Here's the reason for needing to know. We are going to the mountains on Saturday, theres a nice storm approaching bringing up to 8 inches of snow, maybe more to where we are going to get our Christmas tree!!

I am itching to go play but worried I might get stuck or my dad will get stuck.

Something keeps telling me to get one. I looked at Lowes they had one recovery strap up to 7,000lbs but no hooks on it. They also had a tow strap up to 5,000lbs that had hooks on it. Being at Lowes I'm assuming the quality is at the lower end of the scale. I don't want to cheap out but I can't pay hundreds.

I prefer the ones with no hooks on them, just the strap, and get a couple of D Ring shackles to attach to any recovery points on the rigs.

the total shouldnt run you anymore than 50, 60 bucks, at most
 
A tow strap is not supposed to stretch. A Recover Strap will stretch some and then smoothly recoil to snatch the vehicle out of the stuck spot. Best to get a good Recovery Strap and a couple of Good 3/4" Shackles.

We have ARB, Icon, Trail-Gear, and of course our own made in the USA Wheeler's Straps available. We include a Cordura Slider with our straps, in case you need to pull around a tree or over a rock during recovery.

Where are the recovery points on our 4th gens? Are those the two in the front and one on the back driver side?

Two in front, and I usually use the trailer hitch for rear. You can get a d ring for the hitch pretty cheap. I usually just tie it around my trailer ball though

I got 2 3/4 D rings and a bulldog tow strap 3x10. They had a recovery strap but it was 30 feet, should I have gotten that?
 
Click on the photos and read the section under the photo to give you some good recovery ideas. Jeep Recovery 101 - Jp Magazine The front hooks on the 4runner are relatively weak. Some where around 2006 they make the front hooks a little stronger, they were basically used to hold the 4runner onto the ship floor during transport. For what you will be doing they should be fine.

the length doesnt really matter. as long as the rated lbs for the strap is sufficient enough, you should be fine

I would say no cause I don't know what your talking about besides it must be something that hooks on the hitch :confused:

I saw you were at 2,999 glad I was your 3,000th :cheer2: Its a milestone…like 100,000 miles!!

For just a tow strap, 10' is ok. But for a Recovery Strap a 20' would be better. Gives you room to drive into it, as well as less likely the person you're pulling out is going to run into the back of you.

Be careful with that. Using the trailer ball as a recovery point is terribly dangerous.

How does what fit where?

Yeah, you'd need some rear spacers but they are cheap and you can piece together a kit.

Yeah, probably should get a proper D ring. I've never had to use it for a serious recovery and IDK first hand, but I'd imagine that the ball would be relatively stout.
