Towed Heavy and Was Surprised!!

Running the numbers I was at about 5950lbs. I was very surprised at how well it actually towed. It pulled very good even going thru the hills of Mississippi. Averaging 60-70mph I was getting about 14mpg on the interstate and it dropped to low 13s when I hit the city. Truck pretty much stayed in OD most of the time unless climbing a fairly steep incline. Overall I was very happy with it. Would not be something I would do often but due to the incoming weather circumstances dictated it.

I have to say that I am very surprised by those numbers, I have never seen it that high with even less weight. What's the story on the GTO?

I was very surprised as well. I hand calculated the numbers to make sure and it was dead on.

Bought the GTO a few weeks ago off of eBay. Guy had to put a new radiator in it so I couldn't take it home then. Was going back to get it this weekend with my brother but with this damn storm coming in I needed to get it yesterday. I didn't have anyone to drive it back so I grabbed a uhaul trailer and went and got it. Good thing too because as I figured we are being sequestered for the weekend at work and I leave for the FJ Summit on Monday.

Kinda glad it turned and missed us to be honest but hopefully y'all don't get it too bad. I'll be riding all week out of Silverton next week, if you're close and wanna hit the passes with us hit me up.

Side note: I didn't know that the FJS allowed other models of vehicles outside of the FJ and FJC?!

I'll keep that in mind. I don't see the storm being much more then a rain maker.

They have always allowed other Toyota models but for obvious reasons it's less and less FJs each year. I hear some of the original FJ guys have a bit of an issue with it but most of the other people are great. We will see.

I had two FJC Trails Teams in the past and still never got out to one of these events. They really should rename it Toyota Summit lol.
 
I think I was closer to 7k, saw almost the same results as OP.....and, yes, I also agree that this will not be a common occurrence. I had a three hour drive with this one, through semi hilly country in south central/western Virginia, stayed in sequential shift mode to avoid the gear searching. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised with the runner!!

Yep I'd say you were. People that complain that these 5th Gens are underpowered don't really know what underpowered means. LOL Yeah it's no rocket ship but it's got plenty of balls when you need it. Also drive them with a little common since and they get pretty damn decent fuel mileage.
 
Didn't get a picture, but I clocked 6000 lbs of gravel in a trailer last summer. It was up a hill and didn't go on the highway, but had no issues even when I had to climb back up a bit.

Alternatively I headed to OXWest this year towing our teardrop trailer with RTT. It may have weighed only 2k loaded, but that RTT was a nice solid wall of resistance. With a headwind going through NV 3rd gear, floored pedal, 4500 rpm and barely holding 60. Still managed 13 mpg on that trip (got 14+ on the way back without the headwind).

Either way I thought the manual said not to tow in drive and set sequential to 4 so as not to override the torque converter? Did I misunderstand something?
 
I made the same mistake and towed my Nautique 210 400 miles in automatic! Around 5,500 lbs with trailer but I only got around 10 MPG. The tower, speakers, and bimini probably kill me on that one but she pulled beautifully!

I never tried this with any of my 4Runners, I will be certain to give it a try the next time I tow.
 
Air bags cost around $80. I'd recommend getting them and installing them just in case you need to do something like this in the future. You can leave them in the rear coil for a long time at 5 psi, then air them up to 30-40 psi and no rear sag when hitched up. Tows much better. Look into it.
