Towing A Car On A Dolly, 1995 5sp?

I'm looking at buying a 1995 4Runner 5sp, and it's about 800 miles from me. I'd like to drive my Subaru Legacy out to get the truck, then tow the Legacy back with the 4Runner.

Is there any trouble towing a car that kind of distance? I'm not sure what the truck's capabilities are. For what it's worth, it has a small lift kit and oversize tires (I'm guessing 33's).

That would be a hell of a pull for the V6 or 4-banger.... But it would do it...
 
Should have no problem doing it. I have pulled many a car/truck w/ mine. It also has 4" lift and 33 tires. When I towed the cars they were small kinda like the legacy and I couldnt even tell it was back there. I use mine to tow my lan equipmetn for lawn mowing in the summer.
 
2nd gen's barely move themselves...:wow:

If the option is there for someone to drive the car back separately I would go that route. Especially 800 miles...

It's really hard to answer the question properly without knowing what engine it has. The V6 doesn't have a bunch more power than the 4 cyl, but in this case every added HP would help.

Oversize tires will work against you, as they make the engine run out of it's optimal power band (unless the owner regeared the diffs to compensate, but that's unlikely for 31-33" tires, regearing is expensive).
 
I have used both of my yotas to tow w/. On is a 84 4cyl 2d w/ over 300k on it and the other is a 94 4Runnner w/ the 3.0. I have had great success in doing so. Towed a 98 Cadillac Deville on trailer for about 2 miles w/ no prob. Just sagged the tail end down but thats it. Hell even pulled a F250 6.0 ext-cab lond bed over 2 feet of mud til it got caught up on the ruts after it sunk and was buring past the frame and tires. They are capable of more than most think.

I know its not optimal to do so but when thats all you got you have to make it work. Would rather have something else that is made for towing heavy and larger loads but I am not scared to put the yotas to work.
 
I'm not saying that it's not possible, but towing 800 miles is a lot different than towing 2 miles, or towing a few hundred feet in 4 Low.

Thats how I take my crawler to events. A queen size bed will fit in there to if you get a big one. Towing a car with a t4r for 800 miles could happen, but I think it would be miserable.
Its is against U-Haul policy so dont tell em what you wanna haul.

Ive done it before, but with a jeep. Using that uhaul I put my jeep in the back with all my stuff, and pulled my 4runner behind the uhaul on a car hauler. Thats how I moved from Denver to Dallas.

This one has the 3.0 V6, sorry, I forgot to specify.

I'm not looking for any records, and towing is a I-have-no-choice situation. Everyone I know is working next week, I'm only able to do it because I'm getting furloughed.

My main fear is the transmission, since I had a friend burn one up on a Ranger towing an unassembled Factory Five Cobra on a 2 axle trailer. If it's up to the load, then I'm going to go for it.
 
I don't know why this never popped in my head, but I may just borrow my brother-in-law's Suburban and tow the 4Runner back on a dolly with that.

I might check on a auto transport (all 4 wheels off the ground) rather than the car dolly, that way you don't have to disconnect the drive-shaft on the 4runner.
