I own a 2001 V6 SR5 4WD 4Runner. I am in the market to purchase a boat. I am wondering if anyone has met or exceeded the towing capacity rating of 5000lbs. I am currently looking at at boat of about 3900lb dry weight and an 900lb trailer. This should bring me right up to the limit with any gas/cargo in the boat. Has anyone towed this, and what was your experience. Any recommendations for towing this weight (i.e. transmission cooler)?

to me that would be pushing it, but i know there are some guys that pull that much on here and say its no problem. i would say a transmission cooler is a must if youre going to do it. you can always pull to the full capacity of your truck, but stopping it is another issue. and also, how long you want your truck to last. just things to consider.

I looked at a camper that was 3,900 pounds and I think that was pushing it a bit. If you decide to do it, I would recommend these things:
1.) I would tow short distances, don't go across country. Going less than 100 miles a day would be good.
2.) Have really good brakes on the trailer.
3.) Transmission cooler.
4.) I talked to the dealer about an engine oil cooler and they didn't recommend it. I would use sythnetic oil and if you typically drive over 100 miles get a oil cooler.
5.) It would be a good idea to get a wieght distrubtion hitch. Heavy loads tend to sway.
6.) Put the ECT button on and never use overdirve.
7.) Low 4WD would be good when you pull that sucker out of the water, probably the biggest challenge you will have with that wieght.
