Towing Brake Controller

So I've been searching for a while on info and haven't found what I need. My first gen is about to get modded for competition use. (Delta Old School Rock Crawl, Here I come) I'll be towing it behind my 2008 V8 SR5. I was told that the 4th gen v8's have an integrated brake controller already installed. Is this true? If not, is there a recommended controller? I know I've got the seven pin connector but don't know much beyond that.

The connector is all that preinstalled but it's plug & play. I use a Prodigy and haven't ever had a problem.

its pre-wired for a brake controller, and when new, they even came with the pigtail. you will still have to add the controller. but everything else is there and done.

double check that there is a fuse in the trailer circuit. I have seen several times they come pre-installed, and others they did not.

Get this, and the harness for the Toyota, and you are all set. The plug itself is wrapped up behind the fuse panel on the driver side. White square plug, can't miss it.

Everything this man said is truth, right down to the controller recommendation. I got mine through jet.com with the toyota harness and paid $114.01 using a 15% off coupon.
 
I have a V8 04 and use a Tekonsha brake controller and agree with "most" posts above. In my 04 the plug was on the right side of drivers dashboard which is away from the fuse box which is on the left drivers dash. I didn't check the fuse, but when I plugged it in there was power and I was good to go. In the image below you can see where I mounted the controller and where the wires connect. It's worked perfectly and I have easy access to the trailer brake lever if I need to "brake" the trailer independently of T4R.

Tekonsha Prodigy mounted and wired just like in the pic. I've been towing for many years/miles and this is a great setup.

You can *just* see the controller digital monitor past the steering wheel when you mount it in this spot. Important to know things are hooked up, connected and working.

I have a 2008 just like the OP and the plug is on the left side of the dash by the fuse box. If you are 6'1" like me, you will not want it mounted to the right of the steering wheel like the picture above. Your knee will end up hitting it. In my opinion, the best place to mount the brake controller is on the fuse panel cover itself to the left of the steering wheel. This way, you don't have to drill into the dash, the visibility is much better and there is plenty of room to activate the brake override on the controller.
