Towing capacity spec.

In the spec for the '07 Limited v8 4Runner, it saids the 4Runner has a 5000lbs towing capacity. Is that with a trailer that has trailer breaks or not?

I am new to towing so I might be asking really werid questions... anyway. I got the impression that if the trailer has breaks, the towing capacity for the car will be "increased", is that right? If it is, by about how much does it help?

I'm looking to tow a fishing boat that will be in the range of 2500 - 3000 lbs. Is it save to believe that the 4Runner can handle it with no problem (both going and stopping)?

No, trailer brakes DO NOT increase your towing capacity.
They do help, and are needed on anything over 1000 lbs. but they do not allow you to tow more than normal.

A v8 4runner should handle a 3000lb. boat fine.

The V8 4Runner is rated to tow 7300 pounds (7000 if 4x4). See this Toyota Link: http://www.toyota.com/4runner/specs.html, and select "Capacities".

As another member has stated, trailer breaks do not increase vehicle towing capacity, but are necessary.

Finally, a V8 4Runner will easily tow a 3000 pound boat without worries. The V8 4Runner is a surprisingly capable tow vehicle. See my signature for what I tow.

juneau92 - wow, that Rockwood is huge! It's at least twice as big as the 4Runner. I guess a tiny 17' boat will be close to nothing :)
 
Another thing to note

The Canadian v8 versions do not have the larger hitch set up. My 06 does not have the weight dist hitch and thus is rated at a 5000lb towing capacity.

Also check the DOT (dept of transporation) for the law on trailer brakes for boats. I have 19ft on single axle trailer that weighs around 3000-3500 lb loaded and it does not have trailer brakes

Good post for reference, but in my opinion trailer brakes are important to have regardless of weight and what the state law might happen to be. Maybe I'm too cautious, but that's just me.
 
3000lb boat, just hook it up and go. That exactly what I did with mine, which is more like 4000lbs give or take, with surge brakes on the trailer, and it pulls like a dream. Barely notice it's there other than you're using more throttle angle up hills.

Several posters have stated that Canadian 4Runner specs are different. And I remember that some of the Canadian V8s didnt come with the class 4 weight distributing hitch receiver.

In any case, even the V6 should handle a 3,000 boat. Boats are much easier to tow than trailers due to their better frontal area. Pulling a trailer is like having a brick/wind sail behind you.

juneau92 - I see you have a Rockwood & a Hensley! Now there's at least two of us on here! Our 2502 is slightly smaller. Have you towed that up any steep mountain grades? We've had ours all over the Rockies & the Arizona mountains, and it's done quite well. The rig comes in under 10,000 lbs. loaded (trailer about 5,000 lbs wet & loaded). The 2603 was our favored floor plan, but I was leary of the 4,200 lb. dry weight (2502 is 3,600 dry).

I tow a 5,000# boat with the V6. If that pulls as good as it does, I can't imagine the V8. You'll be fine, but TRAILER BRAKES ARE A MUST. I have hydraulic brakes, as most, if not all boats do, and they act up sometimes.
