Towing Capacity

Toyota rates the towing capacity of 3rd gen V6 4Runners at 5,000#.

I towed a 4,000# trailer extensively with our '98 4Runner Limited. I used no add-on oil or tranny cooler and never had a problem with overheating.

Do be sure that the trailer has working brakes if you're going to tow more than 1,000#. 3rd gen 4Runner brakes are marginal for just stopping the truck itself, let alone towing a trailer. I twice had my brakes fade to total uselessness descending long, steep grades. Anticipate this, and manually downshift to a lower gear before starting down a long hill.

Toyota recommends turning off the overdrive (i.e., locking out 4th gear) when towing, and I strongly second this recommendation.

Good luck. Looks like a nice truck.
