towing my 3rd gen..not towing with

so i'm helping the parents move to utah and the plan is to tow the 4runner behind a 26' penske box truck, has anyone done this sort of thing before? how is the 4runner mounted to the box truck is it ok to run on all 4's? or do i need a trailer....so long question short, how do i go about this? i'm worried about my t-case and other running gear.

ok i was wondering if it was going to be that much work i see rav4's being towed behind massive rv's all of the time with no dolly and was wondering how they did that and if our 4runners where the same.

those rav 4s have a dedicated tow bar.

Its acceptable to tow a 5 speed rwd with the rear tires on the ground for a very short distance. The gear oil in the transmission goes to the rear of the transmission due to the angle on the tow dolly. This causes certain gears not to be lubricated and can cause a transmission failure. Removing the driveshaft can solve this problem. I recommend getting a trailer from u haul or somewhere else, when they ask you what your going to be towing, tell them a 1980 toyota starlet, very small light car. I told them I was going to tow a Honda Prelude and they did not let me rent a trailer saying 2000lbs is the max weight, when in reality the tires gross 2500lbs each with 4=10000lbs -2000-2500lbs trailer weight= 8000-7500lb vehicle weight capacity.

I researched this thoroughly since I want to tow my '02 T4R 4WD behind my truck/camper frequently. As previously mentioned, the rear bearing of the t'case isn't lubed while towing and it will fail. You need a trailer or remove the driveshaft......not just a tow dolly.

In my case I went the extra 2 miles and had the driveshaft disconnect installed, had the brakes tied into my truck brakes and bought a proper heavy duty quick-disconnect tow bar. Total was around $3000.00 for all this.
