Ok so if a Tacoma can have a tow rating of up to 6,500 lbs when equiped right (tow pkg) V-6 etc. Then if you upgrade the hitch and install a trans cooler on my 06 V-6 runner does the tow rating increase ??

yes. According to Toyota, adding the weight distributing hitch (the one on the V8) and the tranny cooler (optional but highly recommended) will increase your towing capacity to 6700 lbs.

When I was shopping for a new vehicle back in 2004 I looked at both the 4Runner and the Tundra.
When looking at the 4WD Tundra with 4 doors I found that the tow rating was less than the 4Runner.
After test driving both I found the 4Runner was a smoother ride than the Tundra. So for me the smoother ride,
higher tow rating and less expensive price made the decision easy.
Yes, you can increase the tow rating by doing the mods you talk about. The more important question is will you
be satisfied with your 4Runner's towing performance after the mods? If you intend to tow a 6-7000 lb trailer a lot,
including up and down mountains, are you asking a V6 4Runner to do too much? Will towing something that heavy,
that frequently shorten the life of your 4Runner?
Only you can answer these questions which you should consider before spending the time & money on the mods.

IMO, if you plan on towing lots of heavy loads (6,000 or above) you should get a v8, but really the 4R is not made to tow all the time so if you tow heavy loads frequently, get a full size pickup. SUVs like ours are very versitile vehicles and can tow lots of weight, but they are primarily cargo and passenger carrying vehicles with occasional or light (boats are easy to tow) towing in mind. Just my $0.02, not saying your in the wrong to tow a big camper accross country 4x per year.
