I tow a 2200 lbs race car on a trailer with no problem. It's more than likely not much more than 3500. I have however also towed a decent sized tractor with & 1200# trailer. This was about an hour trip without any issue either. It's a touch truck. Like he said above, make sure the brakes are good.

If you tow a lot it would also be a really good idea to get an external transmission cooler.

I haul an enclosed cargo trailer rated at 3,300 lbs. I put my MC in it, and can stand-up inside. I'm guessing that I'm only hauling 2,000 lbs or less. No problems. (remember to include the weight of the trailer and contents in your figuring)
Tounge weight is pretty heavy thou. No adjustment possible as trailer is all welded. Gas mileage over 2,100 rpms Highway drops like crazy. About 4mpg at least. Only engaged cruise control once, gas gauge went down like quarters at a slot machine....
When hauling my single jet ski trailer (1,100 lbs), it's hard to know it's there.

new trailer set up
The trailer light set-up on that age 4R has a circuit breaker built into the plug unit. Located behind the left side interior wall panel.
I blew it up with the cargo trailer lights demanding too many amps, and having a small short.
Replace with the unit from Uhaul at $18. Toyota replacement part is $250 or so.
