I'm currently looking into a 4th gen Toyota 4Runner, mainly the 07 to 09 model. I've tried doing my own research as far as the towing and seeing what people have towed and the capacity of towing.
As far as I've read and researched thus far is that the V8 model would be best bet for towing. V8 RWD towing capacity is 7300LBS and V8 AWD or 4X4 towing capacity is 7000LBS.
The questions I've come across are, does the V8 for the model years I'm looking at (07-09) have a weight distribution tow hitch? I've read they do, and then the first few 4th gen 4Runners came with a rear tow hitch. I can barely find any information regarding this.
As far as running the V8 4Runner, is there any difference as to the different trim levels? Do they all come with weight distribution tow hitch and trans cooler? Or is there a specific towing package I should be looking for when I purchase a used 4Runner? Do I speficially look for a SR5, Sport, or Limited trim model?
The game plan with this vehicle is to obviously make it last a while being a tow rig for my car to track events and possible daily driver. What I plan towing is my Honda S2000 weighing in at around 2800LBS to 2900LBS and just renting a UHAUL car trailer, which I've heard weighs around 2500LBS. So that would put the total weight I'm towing at 5300LBS to 5400LBS. Aside from the other questions I've already asked, do you guys as 4Runner owners think this car would be suitable for a job? I would probably be towing the S2000 for about 5 to 10 times a year from anywhere between 200 to 1000 miles round trip.
