Towing with a 1996??

I am in the market for a travel trailer. But have some concerns on towing. I have a 1996 V6 4x4 with tow package. Does anyone else tow a travel trailer with this year and model. I'm looking at a 24ft trailer that weighs 4100lbs UVW.

I moved this to the 3rd gen. forum. Your vehicle can tow 5,000 pounds. 4,100 pounds is what your trailer weighs before adding anything. That does not include your propane tank, water, personal items you put in the trailer. You need to look at the GVWR number not the UVW number. My guess is that your GVWR, the gross weight number will be way over 5,000 pounds. In my opinion the trailer is toooo big for your car.

When you look for trailers look at the GVWR number not the UVW number. Just my .02 worth.

Here is a picture of tag about what my trailer weighs, notice the GVWR weight. This type of tag should be posted on all trailers you look at. That should be one of the first things you look at. The salesman might say anything for a sale.

I have a 96 with manual trans with tow packageand got it to haul my 17ft camper. Empty my is around 3200lbs. I tried to figure out the weght and I think it is around 4000lbs. I can usually tow in 4th gear for the most part. I wouldn't want to tow anyting heaviear. I also had to put in airbags in the back and they helped a lot to keep it level. The only thing i don't like is when i have a head wind. Anyway this is the experience towing my 1976 Nomad camper.

I asked these same questions a couple years ago. I ended up buying a 23' trailer and with my gear in it is right at 5000#. I put air bag suspension and trans cooler. After towing it for a few years.....I wouldn't recommend it. The truck will tow it but it works very hard on the hills. Also, if you ever get in a situation...the tail will be wagging the dog. Either buy a smaller unit or a bigger truck.
