UHaul has a guide on their website. I don't see any reason why you couldn't do it, but UHaul may say the tow weight is too close to the vehicle capacity. Of course check your hitch rating and tow ball rating.

Since ya' got the Ford trans cooler and especially if towing on mostly level ground in Floriday, I say No problem.
Might want to monitor trans temps via say Torque.
When I town with mine (only about 3000lbs) my highest trans temps happen after repeated stops/accelerations to 50mph then stopping and repeating again and again. Other than that once up to highway speeds no problem (but i have no big Ford cooler). Luck and enjoy. :cowboy:

don't have means to monitor temp. driving will be 90% highway and country.
You should probably find someone with a trailer who knows what they are doing then.

I told U-Haul that I was hauling a 1977 VW Bug the first time and a 2010 Mini Cooper the second time.

Agreed, just tell them it's a Civic or something. Put the towed 4Runner up front first onto the dolly, then unbolt the rear driveline from the rear flange. I used a tie-down to hold up the driveline into the frame. No problems towing mine, however I didn't tow mine with another 4Runner.

It's a device built in to the hitch of the tow dolly that applies the trailer brakes when the tow vehicle slows down. I don't know if tow dollies have them or not. They're common on big boat trailers.
If the dolly doesn't have brakes I think I would still tow the T4R as Toyota rates the base truck to tow some 5K pounds. I would keep the speed down though, use low gears on downhill grades and keep my distance as stopping distance is likely to be long.

Can't you tow the 4runner by putting the transfer case in neutral? Then the automatic transmission isn't spinning at all.

You have an '01 so it can deliver many engine stats via the odb2 port.
Here is what ya' need:
1) An app like Torque costs $4.95 (there is a free version).

Simply attach the bluetooth unit to the odb2 port under dash by right foot and connect to the torque app and configure. It'll give you real time temps that you can use to adjust your driving and use of OD override to throttle the trans temps. Luck on the tow. :cowboy:

Part of transfer case will be spinning unlubed gears via the input from the rear axle. This has been the case with Toyotas since at least the '80s.
