Is it the same one as the one on the accessory page on Toyota.com?
It looks similar to this one here. Here's another one that's close.
It looks like the adapter is to get the bike rack to be able to mount the factory rack.
Unfortunately all racks are pretty expensive, I've been looking into a hitch rack for bikes and maybe snowboards. Probably will have to get a roof box for snowboards, since I haven't decided on what bike I want and usually those that works for bikes and snowboards won't accept anything outside of the tradition frame design.

Most car manufacturer racks are just a Yakima or Thule rack with "Toyota" or whatever on it.
My wife's Subaru's bike rack is just a Yakima rack that they can charge $50 more for because they put 2 Subaru stickers on it.
If you have a trailer hitch, you are better off buying a rack that loads right into the receiver. Easier loading and unloading, and saves on gas since a bike on the roof will start to suck gas badly.

I use a Yakima hitch mounted rack, can't remember the model, and have zero scratches on my 4Runner, Mtn. bike, or Rack.

The rubber pads that touch the bike should be cleaned of dust regularly as they are prone to collecting dust and holding it against your frame. with a little wiggling in the rack scratches are pretty common. I really think they are worth The $80 bucks I paid, but for the $186 I would much rather you have the thule SideArms.

Looks like the kingpin4 is discontinued though. I was happy with seller though and at the time had the best price I could find.

I have this one http://www.thuleracks.com/product.asp?dept_id=8&sku=916 and travel all over the Northeast and Eastern Canada with at least one bike mounted. No issues, no problems - rock solid.
I opted for the locking unit. You do have to re-tighten the lock bolt (if it didn't lock it would be a pin of sorts) occaisionally.

My Yakima works great plus it has modest security cables to keep the bikes secure while you're away from the rig.

I would check eBay for a Yakima hitch mounted rack. I have used the Yakima roof mounted bike racks and had my feelings hurt when a low hanging telephone wire at work snagged my bike and YANKED it OUT of the rack. This in turn caused damage to my tailgate. What a great day that was. Trust me go with a hitch mounted rack.
