the nitro has 260hp and 265 tq

the nitro squeezes out a little more oomph with a compression ratio of 10.2 vs the 4R's 10.0. It also needs to spin a little higher to hit peak hp.
bottom line, these motors are all within close range of each other, reliability is the key... search for a 4th gen V6 engine problem thread.. you wont find one.

With respect to HP, I think Toyota has been upping the ante lately. The GR line is very competitive. I remember Koz and Thai chatting amicably (lol) about the new 305 hp Lexus IS.. the 3-series killer. :bash:

If you want to talk about underperforming, then the 4.7L V8 puts out a less hp/liter than the 5.7 and the 5.7 gets better mileage... it all comes down to the manufacturer with the new engine.
Each generation gets more powerful and efficient. For engines that have been around the block though, the UZ and GR are rock solid.
 
I think the Rav4 2GR engine should be restroked, strengthened, then put into the 4Runner.

Either that or we could wait and put a 3.7l Turbo flat-6 from the rumored Legacy STI... creating 430 horses and about the same amount of torque....

RAV4 engine? You mean the one in my Sienna...nah, no thanks. It is a car engine with emphasis on HP.

BTW, turbo engines are not particularly friendly off-road due to it's non-linear throttle response...it would suck to all of a sudden get a boost that throws your 4runner off a cliff!!
 
Don't expect anything too much from Toyota in the middle of a generation of a vehicle, wait until the 5th gen and then we will see what Toyota does power-wise

Dude, you just described the engine that IS in the 4runner. Both share the same bore the 3.5 is destroked.

The 2GR-FE is a 3.5 L (3456 cc) version. Bore remains at 94 mm but stroke is reduced to 83 mm. Reported output varies depending on the vehicle application, but is approximately 268 hp (200 kW) at 6200 rpm with 248 lb

With your background, you should know that there is such a thing as torque at low RPM, which is the most important thing in a SUV or truck that off-roads and tows. I would imagine that you need to learn about these traits BEFORE criticizing something that you clearly have no clue about.

BTW, take for example the 4.7L V8 engine. This engine came from the Lexus LS400 V8 engine. However, to deliver the low-end power needed in a SUV, Toyota had to re-engineer & rebuild the whole engine which lead to much lower HP (290 to 230) and a rise in torque at low RPMs (torque peak at lower RPM). So, it's not as easy as you stated...because if you want to increase torque down low, then you will likely sacrifice high end HP. Of course, the newer technology such as VVTi does help offset this difference somewhat.
 
Actually I understand all this... I just don't understand why Toyota is like so random with the numbers... Please read my latest post in the 4th gen forum.
 
Maybe toyota does this to extend the life of their engines? I dont know that much about the particulars, but hey, if the engine is going to last 2x longer than most vehicles, are they really doing something wrong? just my 2cents.

Toyota... You need to step up or ship out. A recent dyno testing of an 08 Forester XT.

And I was so interested in getting either a 4Runner or an FJ too...

EDIT: This is with an intake and a tune and a turbocharged 2.5l flat-4.

EDIT 2: I take that back... I'd still get an FJ (it's cool looking)... but honestly, they really should push the output.

I may be wrong but with exception of some very early 3.4L the 3.4Ls are doing very well as they age and the both the 4.0L and 4.7L are doing well. If I am not mistaken the 4.7L and 4.0L have been around before the 4th gen T4R in trucks.

Some of the 4.7Ls suffered from the turn of the century rattle. Several late 90's- early 00's introduction engines suffered from short piston skirt cold rattle. It was the auto industries' first major effort towards short skirt pistons to reduce internal drag and they over did it a bit. To my knowledge there's no reliability issues as a result just some gas engines sounded like diesels when they were cold.

I almost feel like you're a big Subi/Nissan fan or at least hold a bias against Toyota. I love and hate them all. Within any brand line there are great engines and not-so-great engines. Sometimes the vehicle these engines reside in are good vehicles, sometimes not-so-good.

Of late Nissan has done well with engines. Beginning with the 3.5L in the Maxima/350Z a few years back they have some great engines. I have driven current body Pathfinders a good bit. They're nice enough, I prefer the T4R. If you assess just the engine I might even give it to the Nissan (I'm talking V6's, I have no V8 Pathfinder experience). The Pathfinders use lower grade interior materials, they have better headroom, they use more gas, they 'feel' heavy, the ride quality is so close and in some conditions the T4R is better in spite of Pathy's independent rear. The Nissan transmission is more suited to a sporty car IMHO; I find it locks/unlocks the converter and shifts too much for my taste. Bottom line is they're both pretty good vehicles. I just prefer the T4R. As far as durabilty is concerned our only crystal ball involves looking at a well cared for '00 Pathfinder and a well cared for '00 T4R and evaluate them. You could even look at a 1st gen XTerra or an early current gen Pathy and a nice '00, the T4R still puts it to shame in terms of that 'good as day 1' feeling. In my experience there is no comparison, a well cared for 150k T4R isn't much different than the day it drove off the lot. To clarify before everyone unloads on me, I like and respect the current V6 Nissan engines, I loved the 5.6L in my Titan. As a total package I prefer the Toyota offering and while certain Toyota had engine issues (which Toyota was pretty good about taking care of) I have great confidence that the current 4.0L and 4.7L will age very well. One more thing, I suspect the V6 T4R has or exceeds the rated torque. I know the numbers don't lie but I think it feels like more torque than a Pathfinder, perhaps that's just 'cause the Pathy downshifts too easily for my taste.

Enterprise in my area rents T4R's. I'd suggest renting one for a day and I think you'll conclude that it performs better than the specs would indicate in real world driving.

The lack of Subi commentary is because I know nothing of them other lots of blown headgaskets. That was so long ago though that it has little relevance to this.
