Toyota Dealer.....Car Maintenance????

Hi All,

I have a question as to what's important. Can I do some of the required work instead of paying a bundle to Toyota or a local car shop? Here is what the scheduled service says to do....last time I had to do a major inspection just like this I dropped a couple hundred. NOT THIS TIME...!




Lubricate propeller shaft (4WD)
Re-torque propeller shaft bolt
Visually inspect brake linings/drums and brake pads/discs I HAVE TO HAVE THESE RESURFACED.

Inspect the following:
Ball joints and dust covers
Brake lines and hoses
Drive belts
Drive shaft boots (4WD)
Engine coolant
Exhaust pipes and mountings
Front differential oil (4WD)
Rear differential oil
Steering gear box
Steering linkage and boots

All of those items are important. I would add t-case oil, air filter check and a cabin air filter. Any reputable shop that specializes in Foreign cars can handle it with ease. Take the list and get an estimate... That's my 2cents

If you want to DIY it and your a little bit handy you can do it. There's some good stickies in the Maint section that will help.

If you're unsure have a the reputable place do the brakes and driveshaft bolt torque. (Truth is I don't think most people do the driveshaft torque.) The rest of it is very DIY.

I won't be paying for the dealer to do these, as they all are very basic inspection items. The differential fluids can be changed just as easily (if not easier) than the engine oil.

I already can guess what most of the other responses on here will be, since most members are the DIY type......that's why I spend countless hours it seems on here!

I actually enjoy working on my 4 runner so all of those items are worth doing myself, plus I'm not just taking someone else's word as I've seen them and checked them myself.

There are some great DIY threads on here for all of those items, so get the GOJO out and have a little fun (off the road and under the hood). JMO


Also as stated, both air filters are very inexpensive and easy to do, so worth a check.

Late post here...sorry for that. I just have something to ask..my buddy who's a local mechanic has an offer..it's a package car maintenance...the price is $500. is it that fair for an overall service...or is it too much? Please help me decide...:hatsoff:
