Toyota Direct Ignition (TDI)

I saw the spec sheet for the 2012 4runner has TDI, (pdf can be downloaded at their website Toyota USA Newsroom | 2012 Toyota 4Runner Product Information )

Anyway, I didn't know what TDI is but apparently it is defined below. Did the 2011 4runner have this? I was thinking at first it meant a push start ignition or that TDI would imply a push start ignition based on the definition? That would be sweet to have across all models for 2012. Am I wrong in thinking this?


Toyota Direct Ignition (TDI)
This system eliminates all moving parts within the ignition system (including the distributor cap and rotor) by placing a compact ignition coil linked directly to each of the spark plugs (or on V6, one coil for pair), which minimizes misfiring and loss of engine power; in addition, this system may eliminate the need for spark plug wires. The result is improved performance, greater durability, reliability and reduced maintenance.

Ahh thanks.

I just read more of that spec sheet and saw push button start is only on Limited again. This should be an option on other models at least.

Oh well.

Very reliable ignition system using Denso coil packs and was introduced in 1997 and then refined thru the years . .......Toyota 4Runner History 1997

Had TDI on my 2003 Tacoma, and IIRC it replaces the classic distributor with a crank fire sensor. Evidently it provides better ignition timing.
