OEM skid plates are horrible.

They are thin pieces of metal for looks only. One strike and they're done for. If you really want it to be a skid plate then get something more substantial.

All 4th Gen T4R's (03' to current) use the same skid plate, so yes that would work with an 08'.

The skidplate is the same used on the last gen Tacomas and the 3rd gen SE but the brackets are different to fit the models.


Yes,most of use should know by now that the plate is a looks only item and I remove mine for off roading but on the street it is a nice looking part.

I used Tacoma brackets and made cheapie stell extending plates to hug the front bumper better since the actual 3rd gen brackets extend the plate out and lower which makes it more likely to take a whack just with street driving.

I have a 2004 4Runner. I am looking for a better front skid plate. There is a big gap between the skid plate and the radiator. I want something that will protect that area. Any ideas?

There is a different plate design for 4wd and 2wd trucks. The 4wd has an air flow slot in it. One of our 2004 4runners is missing the front skid plate. I saw several at the wrecking yards in San Diego last week. All were 2wd designs. $40 to $60. Phil

When I bought my truck last year the skid was missing completely and it bothered me so I went through a similar investigation. What I found was that now that these are older, finding a decent non-rusted stock one is next to impossible and way more expensive than it’s worth given the fact that it’s not actually a true protective skid, just kind of a splash shield. I opted to wait for the last group buy that was offered by RCI last fall and get true plates. I don’t rock crawl, so I opted for aluminum, both to save weight, and to have no chance of rust. They also offer a nice filler plate such as what you want, which I also opted to get. With the group buy savings, I was able to get the powder coated option as well, and still save money over the regular pricing. Seeing the quality of these skids first hand, I’d say that even without the discount they are money well spent! Don’t even waste the money on a stock one unless your truck is just a mall crawler. I don’t often go off road in a serious way, but for the little I do, especially construction sites, I’m glad to know I have the extra protection should I ever need it. Even the aluminum version that I bought is 1/4” thick, and fully gussetted, while still being quite a bit lighter than the steel version.
