Toyota Hood Deflector

What a piece of crap. Installed myself, nice and simple. Had installed for about a month. Opened hood today and noticed both ends were loose. The rubber gromets you insert into the hood and screw the deflector too both melted. I know Texas is hot, but I've never seen this before. Can't wait to hit the parts department asking for these to be covered under warranty.

Surprise!. Last week I opened the hood to clean the engine and noticed that right side rubber gromets was melted for mine too.

Let us know whether warranty covers or not.
 
Talking about the Toyota hood deflector, does anybody notice that it wobbles like crazy at highway speeds? I noticed that on both of the 4Runner's.
 
My rubber hasn't melted but it is really cheap! About a month ago I had my hood open. When I was finished I went to close it and pushed on the deflecter just a little and it tore the rubber gromet in half (drivers side). I don't even think I'm going to replace it because when the hood is closed it still sits the same height as the other side.

I've never noticed it wobble at all. I'm actually kind of surprised at how sturdy it is at highway speeds. None the less, I still think it's a piece of junk and it may find it's way into my trash can snapped in half.

Anyone else notice how the paint seems to be "foggy" underneath the deflecter, especially after it rains?
 
Out of curiosity, I looked under the hood of my truck to see if there is any melting but there wasn't. Those rubber tabs still look brand new.

Solice, on my truck I don't see any fogging under the deflector. On my parents truck, you see can see water stains on each corner of the bug deflector after it rains. They don't appear anywhere else on the vehicle.

I didn't see any wobble at all. I do 85% highway driving and surprise to see how sturdy it is even when hign wind is blowing.
 
In terms of wobbling.. most of them will do it at some point. Depends on speed + wind.

For my Canadian wind deflector, I put two extra rubber bumpers about two inches from the middle on both sides. This reinforced it and haven't had a problem with buffeting ever since. Driving in high winds and high speed, and not the slightest buffeting.
 
Just curious, what brand of hood deflectors are you guys talking about? I've have the AVS brand for a year now and they are still as good as the time I installed it.

It may just be a lot more noticable on black then. It's sort of like a dull white haze right underneath the deflector. I haven't noticed my gromet's melting either.

I really like how it looked with it on when I bought it but now looking at the front of the truck I think it sort of hides the contours on the hood. I may take it off for a while and see if I notice any extra stone chips without it.
 
UPDATE: Today I opened the hood to put in washer fluid after a long drive and the bug shield came out of the driver side hole. I heard a snap and it was just hanging down. After I inspected it, I saw that the rubber boot that the screw is in melted. I guess 2 months and 2,200 miles is all you could do with these wonderful Toyota bugshields. :bash: Now to close my hood, I have to hold the bug shield in the hole and move my hand out of the way just when it closes. If I don't do that, the bugshield gets stuck! I haven't decided if I will just repair it myself or take it to the dealer and see what they say.

Mine is making that noise at speed over 120km/h, I put some "door edges guards" on it, but it still making noise (not so much as before).
iFORCE, where did you get those additional bumpers? My dealership doesn't have any.

That's about the same thing that happened to mine. I guess I'm not as upset about it as I thought because it's still on the front of the truck. However, I haven't gotten it fixed either :confused:..

Oh well.
 
Well here's the latest, I went to my Dealer, showed parts dept. the melted insert, they said bring receipt and they will replace the whole unit. I ordered from Concord Toyota after finding on this site. I am returning next week w/receipt in hand, will give more details then.

Mine was on the truck when I got it as well. I would assume that it would be covered under warranty as long as there is not physical damage to it. I am bringing in my truck either next week or the week after and will keep you all updated on the situation.

My other plan was to bring it in for an oil change and not tell them about it. When the mechanic opens the hood, they will have a nice surprise! ;):
 
I took mine off. Two sets of rubber well nuts in less than a year along with a missing mounting bracket is just not something I want to deal with anymore.
 
Mine came with the truck ,got about 8000 mi and don't have any problems at all. It doesn't flex or vibrate at highway speeds either...I am pretty satified too. Guess it takes all kinds.
 
I brought my truck in for routine service today and to fix the problem with my bugshield. I showed the writer what I was talking about and she never saw something like that. She also informed me that both sides were warped, not only the drivers side and that they would fix it for me. I picked up the truck later in the evening and find out that they replaced it with a brand new bugshield under warranty. The tech wrote that the cause of this was from warped mounting brackets.
