Toyota key cracked on the top plastic

I guess it was a matter of time, but my main key, the ignition key on for my 4Runner cracked and keeps falling off the key ring. Are there any cool replacements or way to fix?

I tried using superglue but it didn't work. Just using the all metal spare key the truck came with.

Why not just get some new OEM blanks and have the dealer grind them? That's I what I did.

Heat it up with a lighter, and press it back together. Mine has held for a couple years so far.

I didn't even need a dealer, and I have an immobilizer.

Is it an immobilizer key or not?

If not, just get a new blank and get it cut anywhere that cuts keys (Except Wal-Mart I hear they suck at it...)

If it does have an immobilizer, do the above, and ask or search and you can get the instructions to program it yourself. It's really easy and will take less than 5 minutes.

My 4R only came with one key, and it was an aftermarket cut key. I went to the dealership and had two OEM keys cut from my VIN. Wasn't an unreasonable price for the two [emoji1360]

just head to the dealer mine only came with a copy of the original. i went to my local toyota dealership and paid $18 and some change for a new rubber head key

take your registration and id so they can look up your key code and make a new one

I just took off the plastic altogether and drilled a hole in the metal key itself. It's far less bulky without that awkward block of plastic and will definitely never break off again!

I did this and it worked great. Gave them my VIN and registration (proof of ownership), and the dealer cut a new one for me.

I did this with the old key and it worked great as well. I drilled a 3/16" hole in the middle of the emblem, and used a hand file to shape the top of the key.

Thanks! Just so the replies now. Didn't know you could still get the new key blanks with the black top. Do you h ave to get to the dealer for that?

Also, wonder if this would work, then I could eliminate my remote fob!

My local locksmith/key shop has exact replacements for the Toyota keys, except they have Ilco or Stratec instead of Toyota emblems. Less than half of what dealer charges.

Not gonna work. Our FCC ID is HYQ1512Y on the '99-'01 systems without alarm. That doesn't match those listed and it must.

The HYQ1512Y is physically identical to the HYQ12BAN but still won't work. All other 3G 4Runner remotes aren't even close.

They should both be good for any 1999-2002 that does NOT have an alarm. Those with the alarm use a different remote, and I have no idea what the FCC number is on those.

EDIT; This is as far as the remote. I have no idea as far as the immobilizer chip if you have that. I don't even know how to look that issue up, as I don't have one and have never had to study it. However, you can always transplant the chip from your old key to the new one if the chip that is on there can't be programmed.
