Toyota making 4runner tires bigger!

guess what. i special ordered a 4runner about a 6 weeks ago. Called the dealer to see if everything on track. Apparently toyota is REDESIGNING the tires on all 4runners. Producton has been on hold and he told me expect a 1 month delay due to this. I was told they are making them wider. The gx and 4runner both made in same plant, so they must be worried about potential roll overs with the skinny tires.

Anyone else care to call their dealer to see if this is true?

Redesigning the tires? It would be a running change to a different size if anything. The SR5 already runs on 265 tires while the Limited runs on 245 rubber. Sounds like a change they'd make on the GX. Shutting down 4Runner production would cost LOADS of money and the 4Runner is affected.

I don't think your dealer's claims hold any water. Sounds like he's making something up to soften the blow that it isn't going to come as quickly as he first told you. I ordered mine the last week of January and it wasn't anywhere close to getting here when my dealer found one out of allocation. Just long lead times for these vehicles.

Semi on topic... I recently heard--secondhand mind you--from a dealer that this is the last year Toyota is making 4Runners as body-on-frame. Don't believe it and I regret even polluting the forum with this probable false statement. I would maybe buy that this is the last generation of body-on-frame, but certainly not the last year given it's the first year of a new generation.

i have no faith in what dealers tell me. ive said that all along. they know very little about what they sell. My 4runner will be here in 2 months or so. it typically takes about 3 months for a special order. and regarding the tires, too much knowledge is a dangerous thing. Too bad toyota couldnt get the tires and wheels right. Had me going there for a second when i spoke to my dealer.

After they sell someone's 4R out from under them the reps all have a game. They come up with the wildest stories to tell the poor customer, whoever can come up with the most unbelievable story, and get the customer to believe it and go, 'ohhhh, ok, no problem, I understand' wins a night at the bar for free!

Ain't been made yet?? The LA area has at least a dozen TEs lying around. Not sure why you are being made to wait so long. Perhaps the fool is the guy waiting 6 weeks at the docks for his ghost ship from Japan to get in. jk.. had to take a jab.

I went to Toyota of Escondido and they didn't have any Trail Editions, telling me that they were special order and all that. I called up Autoland on Thursday, April 1st, told him exactly what I wanted (KDSS, Silver, no nav) and he called me back a few hours later, saying two were in transit and would be docked on Friday. I told him to get me one, he called someone and reserved it for me. It ended up being at Manhattan Beach Toyota and someone from there delivered it all the way down to me. Los Angeles to San Diego basically. Toyota of Escondido actually called me up a week after I had my new wheels and said they still weren't gonna see any for a while. I didn't have the nerve to tell him I already bought one, was a nice guy.

AS far as tire size's go, on my TE, it actually came with the exact same tires my 08' Tacoma came with. 265/70R17 Bridgestone Dueler 684II's so I'm not sure why Toyota would have to make the tires wider?

I was at a dealership, left my name & number, told him to call me when the 4R's arrived, back in early November. I got a call from the rep about a few days ago asking if I was still in the market and they have them now (they have had them since November). All I could do was laugh at him on the phone. Told him a few months too late, already bought at the end of November, he sounded shocked, lol. I guess he did not think I was 'serious'. I had no problem telling him he lost a sale because he was too lazy to pick up the phone and call me. Guess I'm not such a nice guy

They just redid it and it will be the last year? Um, that would be a no. Sounds like that dealer is just telling lies trying to get someone to be a truck today.

HAHAHA! In another thread harper7 said he would never put a wider tire on a wheel width it wasn't spec'd for but did....I bet T4Fun now has no issues slapping 275s on his Limited since he's all over harper7's nuts! Oh wait, he's still waiting for his :lol:

got it wrong pal. limited wheels are going up for sale as soon as i get my aftermarket rims....as far as where the hell the dealer got that info from, i will ask him when i get my 4runner...by the way, several tire dealers where i am at advised against what you did, including SEARS out of all people
