Toyota paint like sugar

I have already noticed a few small chips on the hood of my 03' 4Runner. I have only had it for about 4 months. I thought it was because I didn't have a deflector on the front of it?? I have hesitated to buy the hood deflector because I have heard they do not mount very stable on the 4th generation 4Runners. My color is Galactic Grey.

I don't know if it's Toyota specifically. My Nissan truck had tiny chips all over the bumper after a short amount of time and same with other makes I've owned.
The nose of a car is a pretty brutal area, debris is hitting it at the speed of a bullet out of a gun. I think it has to do with the area you drive in and a little bit of luck.
So far no chips but it's too early for me to say if the paint is durable. The quality of finish is top notch. There aren't many better paint jobs from the factory than this.

I have a 01 Tundra and an 03 4runner and I am not too happy with the paint.It chips too easy and appears to be very "soft:.This is about my only complaint with both Toys.
So it seems we found one major defect with Toys; Paint!
When I got my Tundra 2k in late 99 the Chevy and Ford folks were making a point about Toyotas thin sheet metal calling the new truck a "Tindra." 4 years later I'd have to agree that the Tundra's body dented too easily and the paint chipped every time someone looked at me funny. I got hail damage from the smallest hail that seemed to only damage my Tundra in the lot and no one else

We have both a 2003 4Runner and a 2003 Camry - the 4Runner has 2000 miles on it and so-far-so-good (non-painted lower plastic and higher ride definately helps), but the Camry with 17,000 miles is literally blanketed with paint chips across the entire front fascia, including up to the middle-hood area.
I've never seen it this bad compared to both a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta (60,000 miles) and 2000 BMW 323i (65,000 miles), the Bimmer being lower and having more mileage with barely any paint chips.

Bmw used a water based paint on Z3's and they chip very easily. It's one of the major complaints on the z3 boards. Don't know if Toyota does this.
My 6 month old '03 Dorado Gold has no chips. 7K miles. Of course I do very little interstate driving, and the vehicle has not gone through a winter yet. People in Pa that drive daily on the interstate in winter with the road salt/anti-skid flying through the air have completely chipped hoods.
