Well I have already had a sunroof go bad that was under warranty. Cost to replace it was 1700 and some change..and that was minus any labor costs. So I think 500 or 750 to cover me for stuff like that for the next few years is worth it. I also have a navigation system and the cost to replace those are not cheap either.

Although i can't answer your specific question about when, I do think it's a good precaution to take if you have the cash.
The idea that if nothing breaks by 36000 that it won't happen is ludicrous. My family has always owned Toyota, and I've seen several problems occur after 36000 that were not evident before.

You fail to realize that the 4th Gens have a lot of electronics that can be boku expensive to fix.
As wonijack mentioned, the sunroof is a weak point in the 4Runners. I've already had mine repaired underwarranty. I've had experience in my last car when my sunroof was repaired it too cost a pretty penny. It should only take 1 major repair for that extended warranty to pay for itself. As I plan to keep this truck for a very long time, I think it is worth it.
You may think it is for suckers, and that is a valid opinion but opinions are like arseholes. Everyone has one.
As far as the original question, you can try to call Toyota directly and see where there stance is. There should be a 1 800 number on the back of your owners manual.

The platinum plan can be had for about half the retail price if you buy it from the right person. I have a 2003 Tundra for which I purchased the plan earlier this year through a contact on Tundrasolutions.com. The dealer is in Massachussetts and I purchased the 7year/75,000 plan for around $700. Just make sure you do it before your 3yr/36,000 original warranty expires.

One good reason to purchase the platinum plan, besides those mentioned, is that it is transferable for $50 and is a great tool for selling your vehicle to a private party.
