Toyota Remote Start

Hi all,
I just purchased a 2010 4Runner SR5 and am considering the Toyota remote starter. I am aware of the 10 min run time and open-door limitations, but I like the idea of an OEM type solution.

For anyone who has a Toyota remote starter in a 2010 4Runner:
1. If you purchased it from a dealer after your purchase, how much did you pay?

I was quoted close to $700 from Boulder Toyota in CO which is over $200 higher than as a "factory option". They said the part cost was $438 and the rest was labor. I was hoping to pay under $500 for it.

2. How much actual range do you get from your system?

My key fob works from farther than 80 feet, which is the advertised range, so I am wondering if the range of the starter function is somehow limited to be less than that of the lock/unlock capability. Would you mind pacing out the distance?

If it works at the same range as my key fob and if I could get it for the right price, I would definitely like this feature.

I emailed my dealer and asked about the VIP alarm install cost and I got this back, they are over charging! Quote from dealer:

"Both Viper and Directed Electronics Systems are installed in the 4Runners.
The cost is $399 plus tax. If you wish to include a remote start with
the installation the cost would be $499 plus tax. Keep in mind by installing
a passive security system would qualify you for a 20% discount off the
comprehensive portion of your insurance policy."

I bought a OEM remote start kit on ebay two days ago for $339.00 plus $12.00 in shipping. I know I will have to go to the dealer to get it programmed and I don't know what that will cost yet, but the seller was a toyota dealer parts department in the North East and the guy there said I could install it and just pay the local dealer to do the programming.

The kit should arrive Monday and I'll report back what I find and go through to get it working.

FWIW, My dad has the Toyota remote start on his 2007 Tundra and I do not recommend it. First off, the range sucks, plus once its started, the truck turn off when you open the door.....dumb.

Don't know if this has changed but aftermarket might be the best option here.

I have the remote start on my new SR5, it came with it when I bought it. I have over the 80 foot range on the door locks and on the start. Yes it does shut off when you open the doors but I have yet to see a remote start that doesnt. It's a safety thing, say you start it on a mall parking lot and someone gets the door open, what would keep them from stealing the car? I know the factory remote starts on the GMC Yukon and the Ford Expedition both work the exact same way as mine does. The only problem that I have with it is that sometimes if you don't get the button pushed quick enough it doesn't start. You have to press the door lock 3 times one right after the other and on the last time you have to hold it for 3 second. There is a little red light on the key that blinks. I just wonder how long the battery in the remote will actually last if it's used alot like that. If I get a chance measure just how far away mine will work but I know it's well over 100 feet.

It's a safety thing, say you start it on a mall parking lot and someone gets the door open, what would keep them from stealing the car?

I had a cheap aftermarket remote start ($199 Code Alarm I think?!?) on my last car (2003 f150) and it was the t*ts. I loved it... The automatic shut off feature kicked in if you hit the brake (to shift out of park) and the key wasn't in the ignition.

You think Toyota would think of something fancy like that???

I would love to get a factory remote start, but the automatic shut off when a door opens is re****ed.

Neither the Viper remote start on our 4Runner or the factory remote start on our Jeep Wrangler turn off when the door is opened. Both of them shut off if you hit the brake without the key in the ignition.

Thats what I thought too. Some systems do not shut off the vehicle, I know some Ford's that work this way also. I think the Viper aftermarket ones are more this way too.

I'm very interested to hear your experiences with installing it yourself and having the dealer program it. If it works well for you, I will do the same. What was the vendor's name on ebay? I did a quick search for it and couldn't locate it.

Thanks for this information! That is exactly what I needed to know about the range. For my situation, it should work just fine, so now I just want to get a decent deal on it.

a few days ago i just had the viper 5701 remote start installed on my sr5 and its freakn awesome. After one installer quitting and another installer working his ass off after 10 hrs best buy was able to get it done. Apparently there is some new 10bit encryption that is novel with the 2010 so the bypass used with previous models was not compatible so they used my valet key stuck it in some little black box which was placed in the steering column and voila. Now i had my doubts but it works like a charm, i start it every morning from my living room to get it warmed up and when i get in its nice and cozy. It only cuts off if the hood is opened or if i step on the brake otherwise opening the door has no effect which is what i like and it has a 2000ft range

I called around to a few dealers to get various quotes on the remote starter and got pretty different quotes. However, the "standard" price for the starter seems to be $399. Labor charges vary wildly though, with one dealership quoting me 2.5 hours at $105 per hour. When I told him that was way too high for me, he told me about a 20% Toyota accessories coupon that I could apply to the $399 cost.

So I went into Boulder Toyota, asked for a quote that came back close to $700 ($438 for the starter and 1.5 hours of labor for the rest). I told the guy that the other dealer was charging $399 for the starter with 20% off of that and asked him to match it. He didn't blink an eye and all of a sudden, the total cost was less than $500! Just like that, $200 off the cost! So I'm getting installed Thursday for less than the sticker price from the factory. Still not cheap, but worth it to me for that price.

Does the SR5 have the same features and anyone get this story?

Well, the Toyota site only advertises one remote starter and since the differences between the keyless and remote control entry are controlled by the engine computer, I have a hard time believing that there is any difference in installation cost. Just a guess though.

I paid the same, $539. The remote start does take getting used to, if you don't do it exactly right, it won't start. Make first 2 "lock" clicks as quickly as possibly, followed quckly by 3rd "lock" click, and hold that down for 3 - 4 seconds, until you hear another beep, at wich time, let go.

They offered me the alarm for 795 and the remote for 325 more..after negotions and haggling I got both for 600 with them turning the alarm on there and installing the remote start at my house.

I got a call 2 days later (this last wed) that said they were having issues with the remote start and the LE and advised me to wait a month so it could be fixed.

I have this on 2 other cars and love it but if the factory unit shuts off when you open the door, I'll get the aftermarket. My Jeep factory remote start is awesome and does not shut off unless you hit start again. The trans and steering is locked when it's running off the remote start so no one can steal it. If Chrysler can figure this out, Toyota sure could. Inexcusable.

My dealer quoted me $700 at purchase and didn't even want me to buy it. Now I'm glad I didn't. I just didn't want a second key fob. Does anyone have a unit that can work the factory key fob functions also? I know they will open your doors but wondered if there were any issues with compatibility with the 2010 T4R.
