Toyota Response regarding Clunk

I emailed Toyota on Friday regarding the Driveline Clunk, and how Lexus owners are getting so called fixes (though I'm not sure how successful it is). Notice how the Lexus level of service is not even addressed.

"Thank you for your recent email.

Please be advised that currently, there are no outstanding campaigns on your 2007 4Runner. When it is necessary for Toyota Canada Inc. to issue special service campaigns for vehicles, owner's of affected vehicles are notified by mail.

We would also like to take this opportunity to explain that Technical Service Bulletins (TSB's) describe specific symptoms that some vehicles may experience, and outline the procedure for repairing the condition.

Technicians will check for technical service bulletins on your vehicle should you have a complaint about a specific condition. TSB's are used only as a diagnostic tool. Since the TSB is used ONLY as a diagnostic tool, repairs done using them are NOT considered warranty if the vehicle's original warranty has run out, and the repair is not covered by any manufacturer or aftermarket extended warranty.

TSB's should not be confused with vehicle campaigns, which are done at no charge regardless of the vehicle's warranty coverage. As well, campaigns are done to avoid potential problems, while the purpose of a TSB is to aid in diagnosing a condition.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact us and allowing us the opportunity to comment.

Sincerely..."

FYI:

I did a LOT of searching the net (here and EVERYWHERE else) and found where one guy had gotten some relief from this nasty clunk. My Limited had gone back to the Dealership with no attempt at a fix and none in the way of conversation or encouragement of a fix. DIS-SATISFIED

One guy on the web seemed to be sure he had the fix. He had lubed the four zerks on the U-joints with a couple of shots each from a regular grease gun, and then given the two slip-joints a good dozen to 15 hits. He said the clunk was gone and had not returned.

I went out, got my wife to "drive" the gun handle and I did as he suggested. Now for over six months I am CLUNK FREE. Not a hint of it at all !

There are several posts here about the same, some even suggesting pumping grease until the slip-joint expands. This seems like too much grease so I just gave it 12 to 15 hits.

I will now give them a couple more each time I lube the driveshaft.

That is exactly what I have done with the same result: no clunk.

I'll have to try that. Seems like every vehicle I have ever owned has had a clunk or two coming from somewhere. Doesn't really bother me though until something breaks.

I thought overgreasing as described could ruin the driveshaft. I beleive most here lube 3very 5k with their own gun, which I plan on doing this summer and henceforth. Just frustrating that Toyota and Lexus use the same parts but treat customers differently.

I agree that it's frustrating how artificial the separation between Lexus and Toyota is. You can feel good about paying about $8,000 less than the Lexus owners did for essentially the same vehicle. Last I read (which I admit was quite a while ago), the Lexus TSB was having mixed results - certainly not the solution we all hoped for. I'm sure that when the Lexus owners go to the dealer for the $99 5,000-mile oil change, they grease the driveshaft like crazy.

Just curious about the clunk sound. Is that when you go into reverse? I sometimes hear it on mine but I thought it was a 4wd thing.
