Do u know why Uber chose Pittsburgh? What is traffic like there? How is the city center laid out? Have there been any collision incidents reported there with tje self driving car? I bet Uber cant wait for their driverless cars to serve more cities. Based on their model, they can do away with the pesky legislation that made them leave Austin since there would be no driver, so to speak.

They chose Pittsburgh because it presents the most challenging road and traffic conditions for them to test on. Plus, and very importantly, the city welcomed them with open arms. Take a look on google maps at the layout. It has everything include near constant elevation changes. One other big reason they came here was because they wanted Carnegie Mellon University's robotics talent. They literally bought the entire department.
No accidents that I've heard of or seen in the news, except for one car that started to go down a one way street before the human took over and back out.
I've followed them several times. It's like being behind a grandma on sunday, but one that's much less likely to crash.

my mom's '16 prius has TSS, but they smartly/conveniently leave out the best feature (blind spot monitoring) for which you have to pay extra for.

lane departure is annoying, i leave it off everytime i drive it, and if you NEED it..you probably shouldnt be driving anyway.

That sort of proves my point though... These very annoying, ridiculous systems do nothing but encourage more unqualified people to text, eat, and not pay attention to what they're doing.

(I'm not picking on you in particular, it's your choice and such, just using the opportunity presented here).

You have BSM, Reverse Sensors, Rearview cameras, ect. and yet people still somehow manage to bang their rear bumpers. You have people who don't even look at their mirrors, let alone adjust them properly using BSM as an excuse to justify their actions. Hell the whole damn reason we have TPMS is because a bunch of twits for the most part were too irresponsible to check their tire pressure regularly like responsible machine operators and then turned and blamed someone else for their misfortune.

I'm all for progressing technology and all that snazz. Hell I might even buy a self-driving car to commute in when the technology and infrastructure becomes reliable, solid, and realistic. But this grey transition area? This just encourages stupid people to keep doing stupid stuff, be irresponsible, and then blame others for it (oh my BSM wasn't working and I was too busy texting on my phone with my smart cruise control on, sorry I ran you and your family off the side of the road and killed you guys! Toyota should be sued for that!)

I bypassed my TPMS after owning mine for 2 days. Also DRL are a cheat for drunk drivers as well, and I don't think should be an option on vehicles. If you cant see well you turn on your lights, why do we need to have it automated.

And here's another thank you for that. It seems since that has been shut down, several habitual users to those topics who insisted on argument(not discussion) have also quieted down on the forum. I agree this is a 4runner forum, why would politics be here?

I left out a word. I should have said a half dozen commented, not pm'd. Only a few pm'd their displeasure but many pm'd their agreement.

The "dumbing continues" comment is directed at the global population in general. The reasoning is personal responsibility, or lack thereof. Many now want to blame everyone but themselves for their own ineptitude and do so through our legal system. Hit someone in the rear end? Blame the radio, the brakes, the accelerator, etc, instead of blaming yourself for inattentiveness. Now vehicle manufacturers have to offer "dumbass protection" to cover their liability. That's what I meant. Sorry for any misunderstanding.

Accidents happen and I get that. Some involve loss of life or injury and I am truly sorry for that also. Some of these safety features will greatly help in preventing these accidents. But let's face it... blind spot monitoring for example is now a thing because people can't figure out how to adjust their mirrors or look over their shoulder. Auto braking is a thing because inattentive people, or people following too close, are smacking the person in the ass ahead of them. The result? People suing the manufacturers for blind spots or confusion of controls. Anything except accepting their own responsibility of being able to operate a vehicle correctly. THAT'S what I meant.

Easy hot rod! It has to do with apparently dumb people don't drive 4runenrs as the toyota TSS isnt available on that model, and the fact that this is starting to become the standard in all vehicles shows societies general carelessness as 1E has pointed out. :flypig:

neither of you needs to convince me of the absurdity of including so many so-called safety features. traction control, ABS, lane assist, auto seatbelts, auto braking, parking assist, ad nauseum, are things added to vehicles to make up for our lack of paying attention and poor driving skills. until we, as society, look at driving as a privilege rather than a right, the process will continue.

clearly i don't favor all of this crap; i drive an '87 as a DD, and the newest vehicle i have is my wife's '91 celica. i like the driving experience, i don't want to lessen it by decreasing road feel and feedback. i am highly competent driving in winter weather with 2wd.

i still try to avoid driving as much as possible, precisely because of the nitwits who do not pay attention, either cell, text, music, dui.


edit: nh has a "no electronic hand-held devices while driving" law, which includes cellphones and gps units, yet i see dozens of drivers clearly with a cellphone plastered to the side of their head every single day. not a thing i can do about it, except avoidance and vigilance.

One day you could get a cop pulling you over the next day you could drive by one and nothing would happen. What I like to do though with people on their mobile devices or figeting with the radio etc and not paying attention to their lane/traffic/light signals, is I get really close to them and lay on the horn. Sometimes I don't turn my head or limit eye contact because they don't know where its coming from and just get flustered. Other times I lay on the horn and give them a big thumbs up as the drastically correct themselves. I am their TSS at that point.

yeah, some might do that. i try not to escalate stuff on the road, so i'm not beeping at all the nitwits (though i'd like to). i do beep at the douches that pass school buses that have their red lights flashing, and if i can get the plate #, i report it.
