Toyota TE off road experience??

I think Toyota needs to get onboard with the likes of Jeep and Landrover and offer some sort of driving experieince for owners, especially TE owners!

I know you all think i'm crazy, but I think it would be cool to learn the functions and workings of a new TE (or any other 4wd 4runner) with a group of owners and expert 4x4 drivers.

At least if the people at the dealership knew something about the TE features!! I had to explain how everything works to my "sales"person, and I am not 100% on the proper funtion of some of the stuff.

don't think you're crazy at all. great idea... for the company, marketing, and customers. plus it goes straight to customer satisfaction to boot.
 
that may be nice, but you could also join a local Toyota club that does some trails local to you. ask them when they are doing an easier trail and start with that. they should be able to help with ATRAC/rear locker usage. the other controls are just bells and whistles anyways. you can play with those on your own.
 
I think that would be a great idea.

First time I test drove a 5th Gen was on a camping trip. One of the girls that was with us was too scared to drive her brand new 4runner up a pretty decent trail. I told her I knew what i was doing cause it used to be a hobby and I offered to drive it for her. She let me drive while she sat shotty. I was impressed by everything about it. It made me miss my old 3rd gen so much that I knew i had to get a 5th.
 
Toyota might not do it but there may a local company in your area
Which will teach you how to offroad properly. We have one in our area
And it caters to peoples different driving skills.

yeah, there is not much in south florida in the way of places to do such a thing, and any local clubs are too worried about bling, or are 100% redneck, mud covered old jeep drivers.

hope i didn't offend any rednecks on here.
 
That would be cool and I'd like to see Toyota market their off road vehicles a little bit. They don't do anything for the 4R or FJ , Tacoma or even Tundra . Thats their 4x4 stable .

I too would be interested in an off-road experience... especially being the owner of a new TE! Lots of places to do it up here in the Great White North. In the brochure for the 4Runner, Toyota even states they have a cold-weather testing centre up in Timmins, ON....
 
Given that you're on the same platform as the FJ, and what's generically called the "Landcruiser 120" platform at Toyota, most FJ and Landcruiser clubs should have no problems with 4Runners. I checked with local ones in my area, and they all stated I was quite welcome.

This being said, the TE's feature set is unique, and I am not sure the rest of the LC crowd would know what those buttons do either. As stated, they WILL be able to show you when to engage that locking diff, and A-TRAC. More importantly, they'll introduce you to local trails, and more general off-road driving tips.

The terrain select settings are basically macros for combinations of A-TRAC, VSC, throttle sensitivity and shift points. It's possible it plays with the KDSS calibration too, but that's technically on all the time, and triggers when the pistons register too much of a pressure difference.
 
I think some specific 5th gen. education from Toyota or 3rd party would be nice. I think I got a general idea, but I'm still don't have firm knowledge when to use or turn off electronics, what is the rollover point etc. I have some offroad experience from long time ago when I was in the army, but is was not like driving your own $40K truck with family aboard: )

LOL - thanks for that trip down memory lane.

I have my CAF 404's too, for the Iltis, 5-quad, deuce, and Cougar (although those are a different qual, IIRC). We still had a CJ in the armory that would run. I'd have no problems driving my 4Runner TE like an Iltis :)
