Toyota's warranty??

So the question is now that Jeep, Dodge, and GM have extended there powertrain warranty's (GM up to 100K Jeep & Dodge with the Lifetime on the powertrain) and I don't dought that Ford will offer some sort of the same before long? Do you think that Toyota will extend there powertrain coverage??

Although it would be nice, those domestic companies do this to re-gain or gain customer's trust in their products. Toyota already has it with their decades of making quality reliable products. I doubt that Toyota will do anything like that in the near future because people just plainly trust Toyota.

I agree with Thai. the domestic companies are not doing to good with there sales write now and I think its a good idea to extend the warranty to draw in sales. but there is no reason to do this with Toyota products because Toyota has and will always be reliable. hopefully.lol

I'm actually curious about this one, since I own both. I'd be curious why you stated that. Does Toyota cover more with the powertrain warranty than does Honda?

I think that Honda just recently lengthened the powertrain warranty to match Toyota's and also to settle consumer's concern regarding it's recent history of tranny issues (Ody, Accords, MDX, etc.). Prior to this year or so, Honda powertrain warranty was one year shorter than Toyota's (i think).

I think that the domestics are doing the right thing with their powertrain warranty. This is the only way to gain consumer's trust in their products. Sadly, back in 2004, when i was shopping for SUV, one of the two main reasons why i did not jump for the Jeep Rubicon was the weak auto tranny (taken from Chyrsler Sebring). (The other reason was that it did not have ABS brakes.) That auto tranny continues to this day in the new Rubicon with some minor revisions...thus, it is still the weak link in the Rubicon's powertrain. (The 6-speed manual has some minor issues, but is pretty tough otherwise.) If i were in the market for one now, then i definitely would not hesitate to buy it since i know that the tranny is covered for life. So, this extension on the powertrain warranty would definitely be a BIG plus and a dealmaker for people like myself.

On the other hand, i did not even buy or consider an extended warranty on my Corolla nor my wife's Highlander because i have faith in these two oldies. That is what Toyota means to me. Of course, the Highlander's tranny is not all that great but it should hold up better than most domestics. With the newer Toyotas/Lexus, i would not protest too much if T/L extended it's warranties.

Yup...this happened just recently. It used to be the 36 months/36,000 miles. My sister's 2002 Accord had the 3 year powertrain warranty.

I would bet that the extended warranties being offered are full of escape clauses. For example, when Hyundai was offering the 10yr/100,000 mile warranty a few years ago (maybe they still are), it was only for the original purchaser. The domestic car makers probably have a similar exclusion which means they are playing the odds that most people trade their cars in well before they would cash in on the warranty.

I was not aware that Honda relatively recently extended their powertrain warranty to match Toyota. This surprises me, especially since Honda has seemed so arrogant about the quality of their products. They have such a loyal following that they knew people would continue to purchase Hondas regardless of warranty. Plus, Toyota had a longer powertrain warranty than Honda for many years, yet it didn't seem to matter to Honda.
But with various quality issues in recent years (ie: transmission issues in Pilot/MDX, etc.), along with better competition, Honda probably didn't want to chance their market share.

I know the warranties, but I don't know specifics. I have an idea of what it covers, but I don't 100% always know which specific parts are covered all the time. When something goes wrong, then I read the warranty information to see if that specific part is covered under the warranty.

I thought you may have had a specific case in which you brought a vehicle into Honda and Honda didn't cover a part that Toyota would have.

Technically, on older Honda's, the powertrain warranties (at least for the transmissions) were raised to 7yr / 100k mile warranties. At least I know its 7 years, but I can't recall the exact mileage (I think its 100k miles though). I know this is the case for the 6th gen Accord, and I'm fairly certain it applies to Pilots, Odyssey's, etc.

I think the domestics extending the warranty is to compete with cheaper Korean cars and it's to build confidence in consumers. This is much like how German makes offer free maintenance so would be owners won't be thinking about how much it'll cost them to have their vehicles serviced. Like Thai mentioned, Toyota has slipped in quality, but the reputation they've built over the decades makes Toyota synonymous with quality, reliability and dependability. But if Toyota doesn't start improving new vehicle launches the repuation is going to tarnish fast.

Hondas/Acuras with transmission problems, Accord/Prelude/Odyssey and CL/TL all have 7yr/100k transmission warranties. I know a CL and TL owner who are on their third transmission and now they're out of warranty. 2007 MY Hondas have their powertrain warranties upped to match Toyotas.
