Toyotec 3" spacer kit - issues?

Anybody know of any issues when installing the Toyotec 3" spacer kit? I have been reading other posts about UCA's hitting springs, etc. I don't know what UCA's even are at this point but I am just making sure I can do what the website says (complete kit, nothing else needed) and buy and install this kit and make no other mods to the suspension other than getting an alignment.

Hi there, I had one installed last month on my 2010 TE (2.5/1/5). It was installed by my local shop that does all the work on our trucks so I thought it would be fine. However, I got in and drove it & it felt horrible. It felt like I was driving a boat. I'd steer left, my 4runner would think "hmmm. Left? Hold on, ok, left!" It felt very "floaty" to me and I actually thought it felt dangerous. If you've ever driven a truck with a too much concrete in the back, it is akin to that. All the 4Runner's weight was in the back.

I stopped driving it completely and drove my truck until I could get it into the local Toyota dealership, where they installed a front diff. drop (also from ToyTec) and it feels back to stock now. I was a little annoyed that they didn't tell me I needed it when I ordered it from ToyTec, because I was very clear in saying that I needed guidance because I know next to nothing, but my husband says maybe all trucks don't react the same way. And I know that that could be true from just what I've read on here about not everyone's tires fitting the same way on the same edition of 4Runner (some rub, some don't at same lift/measurements).

My advice to you---save your money and get a suspension lift. My local shop told me a spacer lift would be fine for what I wanted, but I will tell you that it feels like I have a lot less spring when I go over bumps/potholes so it should be interesting to see how it feels off road this summer.

I regret getting the spacers and will get the suspension lift when I can get my husband on board, but that could be a little while....:pray:

Did the dealer happen to realign it after installing the diff drop? From what you described, it sounds like a bad alignment more than anything...not sure if a diff drop would affect how it handles. It's suppose to help fix extreme CV angles, but that's usually not a problem on this generation 4runners until you're at or past the 3"+ mark.

BTW, it's funny how you have to convince your husband to let you get a new lift, usually it's the other way around, LOL.
 
Guys---I know! I'm going to explain to him how good he's got it & maybe I'll get him on board sooner than later. He does like how it looks w/ bigger tires and the lift and much prefers this to my 4th gen.

So, when I took it to the dealer after it felt boaty (after lift install & the shop's alignment) I assumed the alignment was bad after reading a whole lot here that led me to believe that. And I knew it needed a new alignment right away anyway, so I just figured I'd take it to Toyota and see what their take was. I didn't know if I only needed an alignment or what. I had them drive it so they knew what they were dealing with and what I was experiencing.

The service manager told me he didn't want to align it---said his tech felt it really needed the front diff. drop and without it the alignment would be a total waste of money. He said the angles would still be really off in front and there would be too much weight in the back of the vehicle. So they didn't charge me anything, but then I had to wait another week for the next appt. and the kit from ToyTec to arrive.

Now it is aligned w/ the drop kit and it feels as good as it can... w/ a spacer lift.
 
Okay, seems the guys got distracted when the gal chimed in, which I totally understand. But more experiences or perspective would be helpful here. Others have told me that the ride after the spacers will be about what the stock ride is. Some aren't satisfied with the stock ride and infamous nose dive but I am fine with it. I am not doing an off-road build here. Just want it to sit higher and close to level and I want to throw some bigger tires on it. I will be doing this soon as my tires are down to the wear bars on the tread. If a different but inexpensive lift is better, I am open to that but I don't want to spend a grand or more on a lift and then another grand on tires. I am going to run 285/70R17's so if a shorter lift will work for that, I am open to that as well.

And yeh, I am the guy that has to justify the lift to the wife and not the other way around. I could change the rims out in this rig and she would probably never notice until my big mouth son said something.
 
If you don't know what UCAs are...then do more research before doing anything. Spacer lift or suspension lift, you will NEED aftermarket UCAs to get rid of the floaty feeling and get your alignment back into spec. Also, stay away from the dealership unless you just like getting ripped off. All they re good for is overpriced oil changes and other standard maintenance and stock repairs. Half the time, they can't even get that right. You can't get a proper 3/2 lift for less than $1000. The best bang for your buck is Bilstein 5100s ($400), toytec superflex rear 2" lift spring ($180) and LR UCAs ($400). Prices are just estimates and there are mixed reviews about the LR UCAs...but you get the idea. You will find an overwhelming amount of people on this forum with this set-up and nothing but positive things to say. 285s will not fit (without rubbing) unless you have a lift similar to the above. Aftermarket UCAs are the key element for dialing in the correct positive caster to fix the performance/driveability and get rid of any tire rub. You will also have to trim or move the front fender liner forward. Again, do some more research and you will read this exact same paragraph in several other threads. You are not alone by a long shot. I too knew nothing about this stuff 2 years go. I already made some mistakes I am trying to help you not make. I also had an uphill battle with the wife...it doesn't get any better. Good luck!

To me it already drives "floaty", especially compared to my 3rd gen. So, I realize that toyotec doesn't specify the size tires i can run, but I am still wondering why the website says the spacer lift is "all that is needed" if the alignment can be put back into spec and some consider the vehicle undrivable without further mods. Anyone else have an experience or knowledge contrary to the above?

While I don't have the Toytec spacer lift, I do have a 3" spacer lift on my 5th gen. And when I bought it, I too read "keeps stock geometry" and didn't realize that tire size does play a big part in this roll. Since you are putting 285s (or at least wanting to) further mods will need to take place because of that tire size.

My runner handles just as stock would but with my larger tires I had rubbing. For me to fix my current rubbing (and the same for others) I have to get UCAs to be able to set my caster further forward. And after that I still might have to do a body mount chop (BMC). These are the things other people have experienced and why it is often suggested to do further mods.

So your alignment and handling will be ok with stock tires and maybe even slightly larger tires, 285s is the threshold where a lot of people have had to do further mods.

Oh and I cut my fender liners too, lots of rubbing there.

But I have 285/65/18 Nitto Trail Grapplers which have a broad shoulder and why I think I have so much rubbing. But I didn't realize that when I bought my "keeps stock geometry" "no further mods needed" spacer lift.
 
The floaty feel is 90% in the stock shocks and springs. Just get an OME kit with diff drop and call it a day. You can get 285s in there with that and not NEED new ucas
 
2014 4runner toytec front spacers and rear coils

hi everyone need some help. I have a 2014 4runner toytec front spacers and rear coils. the rear looks higher than the front. will this get more leveled as it breaks in? also, the other side is slightly higher than the driver side in the rear. please someone is this normal at first?

Ultimately, it depends on your particular vehicle and how much caster you can achieve after the lift. Most people can't get far past +2 degree caster after that amount of lift before the alignment cams max out so they opt for aftermarket UCAs to get the caster back into the +4 territory.

Now +2 degree caster is technically "within spec", but far from optimal; so perhaps if you're okay with how it handles aligned to that, then you won't need any additional parts. Only you can decide if it's good enough, or not.

The reason you get so many conflicting opinions is everyone's expectations are different, personally I opted for getting aftermarket UCAs to keep the alignment on the optimal end.

I don't know what else to tell you besides do it once and do it right; or don't and risk having to pay 2x the price for alignments when you add on a new set of UCAs after the fact and need to get it realigned, lol.

The consensus here seems to be that a diff drop is really not needed until you're way past 3" lift...as always your mileage may vary, but I would probably check my CV angles first, and then think about installing a diff drop. No sense in throwing it on right off the bat if you don't need it. Honestly though, if I saw my CV angles were too extreme, I still wouldn't install a diff drop. I would probably lower the front end back down some until the angles are back in check, lol.

No telling what's going to happen when it breaks-in, usually springs settle down about .25"-.5", but seeing as you have a brand new truck, your factory front springs might still be settling too, so the front and rear springs might end up settling the same amount and leaving it at the same rake. I wouldn't worry about the back end being higher, you kind of need that rake or it will look reverse raked once you load up cargo. The unevenness in the rear is completely normal, and due to the gas tank being on the driver side.
 
How much are the LR UCAs and where can they be found online?

Also remember the extra maintenance requirement for aftermarket UCA's. While you will get the "look" you want the downfall is reduced ride quality and increased maintenance. Search rebuilding UCA's and you will see. Good luck.

If you just want to beef up the look a little bit perhaps consider getting a set of Bilstein 5100s all around and either bumping up the front perch to 0.85" and leaving the rear end stock height; or bumping up the front perch to 1.75" and adding a mild spring spacer in the rear.

This way you end up actually upgrading your components (instead of making things worse with such thick spacers), and you don't have to deal with all the headaches of trying to maintain a good alignment on stock UCAs. I think at lower lift heights like 0.85-1.75" a good alignment is still within reach on stock UCAs :)

I'll add one more opinion: Slow down, read, research, give yourself a little time to really make a good decision. You can spend anywhere from several hundred to well over $5,000 on a lift. I'm not a fan of spacer lifts because they prevent your front factory bump stops from working properly and can subsequently lead to damage/destruction of your front struts.

Most people lifting a vehicle for the first time don't know enough about what they really want. They rush their buying decision and end up redoing their lift - sometimes several times!

[MENTION=66520]T4R_Finally[/MENTION] I agree with David and Eddie on this, given your description of wants, budget and willingness to get into the details of the setup, less is more. There are two big issues that are generally not fully addressed when this type of request for input comes up.

1) Tire size, tire type (e.g. LT with aggressive, squared shoulder vs. P-metric with street-friendly rounded shoulder), wheel width, wheel offset, shocks, springs (or spacers) and UCAs are all part of a connected system, and therefore, each variable has heavy interaction with one another and the ultimate result. Most people on the forum have changed multiple variables at the same time (especially when lifting 3" in the front and wanting to minimize installation and alignment costs), so it's nearly impossible to isolate the overall result to a single variable. Reported rubbing even after a 3" lift on the front liner, mudflap or body mount will have less to do with the lift itself and more to do with the wheels, tire size and tire type. The same might apply to how the vehicle drives after the lift. Tires, proper alignment, etc. will again also impact how the vehicle drives.

2) Satisfaction with the change (s) is highly subjective. What may work for some, won't for you.

I get that you've ruled out changing the wheels. You want to fill in the wheel wells a bit with bigger tires (e.g. 285/70/17) and you also want a road-friendly tire. You want some lift while staying within $400 or so to make it happen, without having to also invest on new UCAs to get you back into spec alignment (namely caster). New UCA's is not only more cost upfront ($400 for the LRs, which is the least expensive option), but you then have to deal with additional maintenance, possible squeaks, not to mention in the case of the LR's, various redesigns due to failures (I'm still not certain of the reliability of the design).

The other point worth bringing up regarding spacers, particularly 3" for the front, is that the stock springs are already intended for a smooth ride (i.e. soft, which is why many complain about nose dive under hard braking). When you jack up the front by another 3", you impact the overall vehicle dynamics, which is why many talk about having done a spacer lift at first, been reasonably happy with the results (confirmation bias), only to come back 6 months later to say they scrapped the spacers for an upgraded coilover lift.

I guess the bottom line is that with stock wheels and P-metric, road-friendly 285's, you'll only have minor rubbing on the front liner, which can be addressed with moving the liner forward (very easy to do, exactly what I did when I first bought the 4Runner). With the Bilstein 5100's in the front set to any of the available options, you'll go from leveling (.85"), to minor lift (1.75"), to a bit more lift (2.5"), while still staying within the minimum caster spec after alignment, so you don't have to worry about UCAs. You also get the benefit of upgraded shocks for the same cost of spacers. After you decide how much lift you really want in the front from the 5100s, you can then decide what to do with the rear to make it look right.

Sorry for the rant, but I've seen you post numerous threads now asking similar questions, and while I get that doing endless searching through the forum is not a lot of fun, you do need to invest some energy and effort and not just post for individual input via each thread.
